Dried Mushrooms and spores they might contain
    #2177444 - 12/14/03 07:45 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I was wondering if I could use some dried out old mushrooms to use in cultivating some new ones. These are about 5 years old and totally dry. They have been in a bag the whole time. Can they be used?

Hmm.. 5 years old?

First off, it would be hard to get spores to release from caps that old, and secondly, I wouldn't think they would have any.

Youd be much better off buying some new ones!

but it might work!

first problem i see is stelizing the cap without killing the spores.. i guess bleetch might do it, but im not shure..

the if the cap is just soked in honneywater, i guess it will colonize.

try using AGAR a few times to isolate the right kind of groth.

but, all this is if u wanna preserve the strain u have, otherwise just get new spores.

Agar... swab the gills with a q-tip... and grow on agar... you will get contams... but you may be able to work around them.

Good luck in your quest.

Do not use bleach... you will kill the spores.

I just did this a while back. Take several small (and I mean really small) pieces of gill material off of the mushrooms and put them on agar (I used PDA). Then incubate them until you see good growth and take the least contaminated piece of mycellium you see and transfer it to peroxided agar. After that you will probably have a fairly clean culture, but you might have to transfer another time or two. It really is pretty easy to do.

Using Gentamycin sulfate would help for this type of project.

okay, here is what you do. I do this wheneve i buy some shrooms from a dealer and they are kick ass and i want to grow some. pull a cap off of a stem, get a sterile syringe full of sterile water with a needle. Squirt a drop into the cap and suck up some gill material. it should do the trick. caps are generally clean as long as they are not open and an imature cap will still have spores in it. as long as it isnt too old it should work, otherwise use petris with agar and get ready for seperations

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

It would help, but I didn't find any need to it. A transfer to peroxided agar seems to take care of any bacteria that may appear quite nicely.

Wow. Some would wonder the same thing as in some places a quarter oz dry is cheaper then a spore syringe and easier to get... Thanks=)
So someone could just use liquid PDA agar in the bottom of mason jars (http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24252), boil them, then add spores using tahoe's method? Or would that just be paranoia?=)
