Psychedelics and Religion
    #2177429 - 12/14/03 07:37 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Unfortunately, I can't provide a link, but I'm reading an interesting article about psychedelics and the role they play in religion, and I found this paragraph to be of particular interest:
Quote:

There are, of course, innumerable drug experiences that have no religious feature; they can be sensual as readily as spiritual, trivial as readily as transforming, capricious as readily as sacramental. If there is one point about which every student of the drugs agrees, it is that there is no such thing as the drug experience per se--no experience that the drugs, as it were, merely secrete. Every experience is a mix of three ingredients: drug, set(the psychological make-up of the individual), and setting(the social and physical environment in which it is taken). But given the right set and setting, the drugs can induce religious experiences indistinguishable from experiences that occur spontaneously. Nor need set and setting be exceptional. The way the statistics are currently running, it looks as if one-fourth to one-third of the general population will have religious experiences if they take the drugs under naturalistic conditions, meaning by this conditions in which the researcher supports the subject but does not try to influence the direction his experience will take. Among subjects who have strong religious inclinations to begin with, the proportion of those having religious experiences jumps to three-fourths. If they take the drugs in settings that are religious too, the ratio soars to nine in ten.

1/4 to 1/3 of the general population could have personal religious experiences(no need for any scripture or pastor or anything) from ingesting psychedelics. Can you imagine the implications for organized religion? No wonder so many are quick to condemn drug use.

What about Carlos Castenedas and his books. I read them lots of years ago. Weren't the experiences he had, and the teachings by his mentor, also centered around religion of some sort?

I haven't read any of his books, but ya, that's what I've heard. Anyway, I was just surprised to see the statistics in the article I cited. Imagine if 1/4 or 1/3 of the U.S. population had a personal religious experience. What do you think the implications of that would be?

You don't think it might undermine organized religion? It clearly brings about profound changes in consciousness, so why would it not bring about profound changes in society?

Someone wrote on another thread that what he experienced on shrooms was different than what he experienced in reality.

Are you saying that what people experienced on shrooms, assuming that they had profound changes in consciousness, would affect them in general so much in their lives that it could bring about a change in society?

Well, does anyone here take the benefit of the effects of taking shrooms and apply those effects to their lives?

Just curious.

It doesn't have to be shrooms or even any drug in order for that to happen. Any realization or epiphany like that could lead someone to make major changes in their lives, if they remember it after the moment has passed. That's the key - remembering it and actually making the changes in your life.

The same thing has already happened to you - your cataclysmic event last year gave you the kind of sudden clarity and change of perspective that people get from shrooms. It's just that shrooms, acid, and other psychedelics put you in a state of mind where you're more likely to have those types of insights. Shit, I can't even put that into words right, but I think you know where I'm going with it.

I wonder if the Yippies might have been on to something when they threatened to spike the water supply with LSD.

We talked about this one night - you panic 'cause you keep trying to fight your brain for control. Tripping and staying in control are completely opposite states of mind. If you try to be in both of 'em at the same time, your brain's gonna flip out.

You just have to go with it. That's why they say to have a trip-sitter who'll remind you it's just the drug if you have a bad trip. The best way to get out of a bad trip is to ride it out 'cause fighting it only makes it worse.
