Claviceps in my rye?

So anyway, I was prepping some grain spawn and I found this black stuff in with my rye. Upon close examination the black things appeared to be sclerotia. I'm wondering if it's ergot, not so I can go on some misguided cultivation mission with it, but so I can call the manufacturer of the rye and have the lot number recalled. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There is almost always a few ergot sclerotia in rye. Not harmful in low concentrations.

Really? There are a lot in this bag. I'm guessing close to a cup in the whole 50lb bag, since I pulled well over a tablespoon out of 6 quarts of dry grain. I thought ergot had largely been eradicated. I was under the impression that even just a few whole sclerotia could have toxic effects.

Ergot seems quite common ime. I frequently find it growing on roadside grains.

Well this is very interesting. I've never found it in rye before. Just exactly how much has to be eaten to make someone sick? Everything I've read about ergotism seems incredibly nasty.

I guess you should just discard whatever has Ergot growing on it.
I don't know much about the toxic effects but I believe I've read that ergotism mainly is an effect of continuous intake. I might be wrong though.

Well, the jars I have going seem to be fine. I can even see in one jar where the mycelium is growing on the ergot. I doubt any of the toxic effects would be carried into the mushrooms. I don't see any reason not to use the rye since I don't plan on eating it. I just thought it was interesting, since I've never seen ergot before.

Looks like I missed a vital part of your initial post. I was erroneously thinking you were talking about grains for food. Obviously any toxins from the Ergot won't appear in the mushrooms you're growing. But what effects its presence might have on the success of your grow, as far as contamination goes, I can't tell.
