General Order 1

Quote:
The Prime Directive, also known as Starfleet General Order 1 or the Non-Interference Directive, was the embodiment of one of Starfleet's most important ethical principles: noninterference with other cultures and civilizations. At its core was the philosophical concept that covered personnel should refrain from interfering in the natural, unassisted, development of societies, even if such interference was well-intentioned. The Prime Directive was viewed as so fundamental to Starfleet that officers swore to uphold the Prime Directive, even at the cost of their own life or the lives of their crew.
With that out of the way...
Some teach humans' cousins sign language, and I just read of some trying to get them to understand microwaving food (put raw foods in a box, observe and wait for 'a change', open box to retrieve cooked foods).
Is this even a good idea? It took (most) modern humans many generations to become as understanding of things as they are, with nearly zero outside influences. By introducing these advanced concepts and teachings to a race that, in all this time, has not been able to figure it out on their own, isn't this really playing with fire?
To advance a species faster than its brain can develop naturally invites a lot of problems. I'm not saying it'll be a Planet of the Apes problem, but do you understand what I'm thinking?
Now, with that also out of the way...
I read somewhere that hallucinogens may have kick-started the human brain into thinking outside its own box and advancing more rapidly. If true, what kind of effect do you think would happen if an ape at a local zoo got ahold of, and ate, magic mushrooms? How about Earth's second most intelligent species; dolphins? Do you think there would be giant leaps in their thinking? Advancement of hunting, grouping, understanding, language comprehension?
Just a thought. Don't feed the zoo animals magic mushrooms.

McKenna's stoned ape theory...
"To summarize: McKenna theorizes that as the North African jungles receded toward the end of the most recent ice age, giving way to grasslands, a branch of our tree-dwelling primate ancestors left the branches and took up a life out in the open -- following around herds of ungulates, nibbling what they could along the way.
Among the new items in their diet were psilocybin-containing mushrooms growing in the dung of these ungulate herds. The changes caused by the introduction of this drug to the primate diet were many -- McKenna theorizes, for instance, that synesthesia (the blurring of boundaries between the senses) caused by psilocybin led to the development of spoken language: the ability to form pictures in another person's mind through the use of vocal sounds."

McKenna was an idiot. The ice age came to end 10,000 years ago. humans have had language capabilities for hundred of thousands of years.

There have been many glaciation periods in that time frame. I may be wrong, but I don't think McKenna ever said that it happened towards the end of the last Ice Age. Seems like a badly written abstract.

If an ape wants a hot burrito supreme, why does that mean I gotta get off my ass and make it for him? You gotta be a genius to invent a microwave, not to use one.

Party pooper! I think they'd immediately start stacking rocks into underwater stonehenges then writing sanskrit with their seabeaks.

if you were as smart as a dolphin, you'd know they're the earths 2nd most intelligent species after whales.
