Strange win 8.1 audio problem

I know I shouldnt use windows but..
Since 2 days I'm having a weird audio glitch. Half my sound files don't play. They sound completely muffled or have severe flanging wahwah effect.
You can have 10 mp3 and half dont play, consistently. You can have 10 wav system sounds and half dont work you can have 10 youtube vids, half have their audio shot
Its not a particular file type, some play some don't.
I undid yesterdays "critical windows update" which I suspect is the culprit, but no bueno. Whats broken stays broken.
If I send a friend those files they play fine on his machine.
Whats going on here?

Fixed that for you. Update your audio drivers. Try playing the files on VLC.
If that doesn't work, reformat and install Windows 7 and profit.

Lol, great advice telling Asante to use an even less secure operating system.

This is interesting.
My headset is malfunctioning (loose internal wire makes one ear mute). All the audio files that play or dont play, play correctly on a headset but only some on my speakers.
I should show some testicular fortitude and switch to linux, but I'm hooked on all the stuff that works with windows. I'm lazy to relearn I guess.

That sounds like it's a hardware problem, then.
So all the files play correctly on the headphones (albeit the fucked up ear).. but don't work half the time on the speakers? If so, probably an issue with your speakers. Check the plug, that's something that often gets fucked up. Make sure it's plugged into the correct port on the PC (should be green?) Maybe try wiggling it around a little.. I had a speaker system that was old as fuck and wouldn't pick up half the time.. it was a problem with the wiring.. and messing around with the connector would often fix it temporarily. But the slightest gust of wind or movement or whatever would knock it out of place and then have a fucked up connection again. Try some different speakers or something if possible.
Byrain.. less secure? Yeah sure 8 has a few minor security improvements.. and a wretched UI and tons of annoying compatibility issues and stupid shit. 7 is nice and stable... it's secure enough, and can be made more secure. But I don't think his issue is a software problem anymore.

Without reformatting and/or seeing if the issue is also present in a linux live cd/dvd/usb sounds kind of hard to know if its hardware or not...
If you are going to use windows you should run the most up to date windows because otherwise you're pretty much just asking some Chinese hackers to take advantage of you.
@Asante, no testicle fortitude is required to learn linux, the only real hurdle is the feeling of entrapment caused by a really shitty os that was never intended to help the user get better. If you want something super easy try pclinuxos or linux mint, if you want something that will help you become a better computer user while still being fairly easy then do slackware.

He just told us it works fine on his headphones but not on the speakers. That's 99.9% chance a hardware issue... Yeah reformatting or installing Linux would tell us for sure.. but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion when it's almost certainly a hardware problem. For most people reformatting is a day long expedition.. test the easiest stuff first and work your way up. And running Win 7 is just asking for chinese hackers to take advantage of you... lol wot.

He said it only works on some of the speakers, it wasn't very clear, does that mean those speakers work elsewhere or just not at all? Does switching speakers fix the issue?
Testing on a live install would take 10 minutes, you don't need to reformat right way although it might be a good idea to do it once in a while when running windows.
And is it really so hard to see that running out of date windows installs will just mean that hackers and other malicious parties will just have had a lot more time to figure out how to take advantage of your installed software? Running an up to date system means there will be less of these vulnerabilities, especially with windows which is already extremely vulnerable and well known for keeping its users inept. Don't you professionally work with computers? This is pretty basic stuff you should know man.

That argument doesn't work well when discussing windows 7 to windows 8, because both are still supported by microsoft and actively patched. And since neither are open source, assuming you have the latest windows updates installed then they are both about equal for security. Saying one is more secure solely based on being a later version isn't really accurate.

Its more about which release has been out in the wild longer, there has been a lot more time to work out vulnerabilities for windows 7 than there has been for the newer releases. Of course there is no telling what parties have access to privileged information, but the common person only has the release copies to work with and those are the ones making cheap viruses to infect ignorant users. This is not to say the difference is anything drastic, they still are both garbage and full of vulnerabilities.

Right click your speaker/sound icon on the bottom right. Go to playback devices. Right click and go to properties and then the advanced tab. Make sure your default format is 44100 Hz. Had similar problems as you and it turned out to be a hardware compatibility issue. 44100 Hz is more of a common format so it should hopefully fix your issue.

It was set to 48000 so I changed it, but thatv didnt fix the issue. I'm thinking hardware too.

Do a full restart of both the pc and the audio receiver to properly power cycle both. If this is not a option you could try just disabling the playback device, power cycling it and then re-enable it.
If the problem persists after a restart it might be a hardware problem, try playback from something else like your phone and see if your getting the same issues.

try plugging your speakers into your front panel headset jack, where you know audio plays properly, for the fuck of it

Change the speaker setup to something lower, there is a glitch with the 5.1 and above.
