Would it hurt my cacti if I build a box out of windows to put them in.i work long hours and dont want them catching a thunderstorm while im gone.dont want them getting burned up just want to know if anyone has tried this or if its a bad idea all together.thought about a green house but dont have funds for that right now.also have cuttings in rooting process and not sure if they would dry out inside not being rooted.

You'd need some ventilation but if it's not gonna be entirely sealed up I'd say no problem.

Was thinking about bricks under the corners and slanting the top to shed water so there would be a gap there also.will the magnification of the sun do harm?

Most definitely. If anything a shade house would be better.

I have not been able to work on it more, but I am building a tent greenhouse. I think you can do it, but like Ferrel said, put some shade cloth in

Windows won't magnify anything. I have all of mine in a greenhouse and now that the weather has started getting hot I just leave the door open all of the time but it's still probably 10 degrees hotter in there and the cacti absolutely love it. I'd say as long as you're getting some ventilation they'll be more than happy because the warm temperatures plus copious sunlight seem to really put them into overdrive. The ventilation is important not only because of the threat of molds and fungus developing, but also you want lots of CO2 to feed your cacti. I had left my greenhouse closed up fully when it was still getting really cold at night, and forgot to open it before heading to work so by the time I got back and went inside, it was like breathing pure oxygen, felt great to me and my lungs and was so refreshing but I know the cacti need CO2 to grow so don't starve them.

hehe, wish I could build on the small scale. I had a half day at work today, so I am home to work on my ginormous greenhouse. Its 300 square feet.

Really nice. Actually sun can harm even trichs. (it really depends on where you live) if you do get signs of sunburn , just shade a bit with some parchment paper or a cloth. they will enjoy the warmer temperature anyway.

Now I'd recommend putting a thermometer in there to make sure you're not getting too hot and you should be golden.

THIS is the problem I see. Getting too hot.i don't really like the idea lost 87. I can see problems arising if the temperature gets too hot. Not to mention being such a tiny enclosure. You mean well but there has to be a better way of keeping them sheltered. I just don't want you to burn your babies. They are beautiful btw. You've done a good job so far with them.

Dude, just check the forecast, and when it calls for rain put them inside it before you go to work.
Then on the days when no rain is in site, leave them right outside it.
You don't have too may,so it wouldn't take long to do so.
I could only see this being a problem if you had tons of cacti, and if that enclosure was 10 time bigger to hold them.

Also,Trichs can handle lots of water, and I have never covered any of mine.
Recently it rained a drenching steady rain non stop for three full days, and it didn't even phase any of my cacti.

So true. Mine have just been bulking up with all the rain. I haven't had any trich deaths yet.

I'm surprised no one tried to discredit me,like they do when I tell people to grow a desert plant in full sun
