Huge Unknown Panamanian Mushroom
    #21771163 - 06/06/15 05:07 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
Cow poop. Found this one with a bunch of other active shrooms - but I'm not 100% sure about this one.

Gills:
Blackish.

Stem:
Is whiteish with gold/brown and some small green/blue spots that appeared after I picked it.

Cap:
Brown/dark gold

Bruising:
Small blue/green spots.

Other information:
The rainy season just started here in Panama. Picked them at a cow farm, got a bunch of them that I can positively identify. It's just this one... which is pretty big that I can't identify 100%.

Pics:

I found it with a bunch of mushrooms like this that i've tripped on for years:

Thanks for your help guys  Better safe than... dead.

Man that's a hard one!

It doesn't really look like a cube, but more like an agaricus.

They're Psilocybe cubensis. Check for blue bruising.

All the other are for sure, but that big one looks peculiar.

I'm sure it's just  cube too though too.

Look at the gill attachment (or lack thereof), lack of any bluing, the yellow bruised stem and silver/grey cap. Why so quick to dismiss Agaricus?

The lack of an annulus also had me weary, however I disagree that there is no bruising (3rd picture, middle of stem), and given that they were picked amongst definite Psilocybe cubensis, I thought it was more likely that it is another Psilocybe cubensis specimen. If he's going to consume them, though, he better make sure of that bruising. Agaricus is by no means impossible.

I've never, ever seen Psilocybe cubensis with a silver cap...but I see that feature with old Agaricus extremely often.  I just don't want to see anyone get sick and have a shitty time.

I agree that silver cap is not indicative of cubensis at all!

I've also seen it before in agaricus as well.

Yes. I'm onboard with Agaricus until proven otherwise.

She is an old girl. Was it in the sun? Perhaps the sun has started to dry or stain the cap, giving it a different color. Maybe the lighting is making it appear grey like that..? It is drastically more shiny grey in the first picture.

That really looks like blue bruising though. I checked in paint and it's greenish, maybe a bit altered from the quality but the same color is only in a few spots on the stem that look bruised. Is it blue on your end?

i meant the spores looked black, although i do know not to trust the color of the spore on the mushroom itself as the spore print color could be different. those could be black gills and not spores at all as well.

i doo see the blue bruising, op id say take a print just for reference. toss it instead of being sorry, it looks like you have plenty others. the others all look pretty uniform as well, as this specimen has a different shape, and doesnt have the nipple the others do.

I am 100% positive of blue/green stains - but there are only about 4 or 5 spots of them though. It's not like it is covered in blue stains like a normal cube would.

Here are a few more pics of the stains. I have it set up for a spore print so I will get that in a few hours. I'm def. not going to eat it - but it's good for reference. Especially since I have some local friends that wouldn't have hesitated to eat it.
