dunno about the canada laws.. but here in the states, you do not need any documentation to operate or own said weapon due to the age.

You do in NJ. I did some googling and some retired teacher was facing 10 years in prison for not having the proper paperwork. NJ doesn't exempt antiques apparently.
Yes you can buy real flintlock pistols, but one I'd feel safe shooting would probably be pretty damn expensive and if it's that expensive I'd think I wouldn't want to shoot it. Maybe a replica would be a better option.

They look dam cool and I imagine it would be cool as all hell to shoot. But yes backfiring is a big issue. I'd like to keep my face

I want one. I want a black powder rifle too.. Holy shit they are loud though. I saw someone shoot one for the first time at my last range visit. I thought my 45 was pretty loud. The BPR sounded like a bomb had went off.

He's talking about AR style rifles. The lower receiver is the part that houses the trigger mechanism and such. If you buy a fully built AR, that's where the serial number is and that's the part you're registering as a firearm.

You can buy new black powder firearms. It's not exactly like the antiques as you will have to buy the primer caps, if you want Flint lock you have to a: buy a antique and B: find Flint and cut it down
