primordia with inverted gills?
    #21770835 - 06/06/15 03:09 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

A friend recently move his psilo operation to a more conducive environment and a few cakes put out growth that seems odd, but I'm hoping it's primordial but just being seen on a macroscopic scale because of the new environment. they look like if you were to take the mushroom head and turn it upside down and then put it on the stem Whitney's gills words sucker cup looking things Zhong toward the bottom like they're trying to look for water. are they contam?

My guess is Schizophyllum contamination. Whatever it is, it isn't cubensis, or anything psychoactive for that matter.

first I looked in my reference the mushroom cultivator quotation a practical guide  to growing mushrooms at home stamets et al. book. but I found nothing when I googled though it looks exactly like what you said. any insight into where it came from? trying to figure out if it was in the environment substrate or the Spores.

More importantly, is it airborne. Will it affect other cakes?

I grew mushrooms but they don't look right

Not all contamination is slimy or moldy.  Sometimes a mushroom substrate can unintentionally produce unwanted mushrooms.

Presenting an informational collection of images of contaminate mushrooms growing on cakes or in trays.  The list is rather short so you should be able to find your rogue mushrooms here.  If you find something completely different, let me know and I'll add it to the list.  All images are of actual contaminate mushrooms observed and documented by members of the Shroomery forums.

-------------------------------------------------------------

#1 Schizophyllum commune (Common Split gill)

This is an extremely common contaminate mushroom, often mistaken for small Pleurotus (oyster mushrooms).  The mushrooms start out looking like a tiny flask before flattening out to the mature fan-like form.  This species has a worldwide distribution where it is usually found growing on wood.  Despite it being a highly successful wood decaying fungus, it seems just as happy on rice flour and vermiculite.

Reported in the forums several times a year, with reports spiking in the summer months.  Forum posts suggest that the usual source of this mushroom contaminate is natural environmental spore load.

This species is actually edible, but is usually designated as inedible in guidebooks because of its tough, chewy texture.

Hope this helps. Basically yes, it spreads and it is best to keep the spore load down in your home. Working with agar and still air boxes imo makes it so you don't have to worry about sporeload. Also keeping gas exchange holes filtered too. If you do this, there's no place for anything to germinate.

If you work in a still air box, get clean mycelium on agar, and grow it out with filtered exchange, where will any contaminations get in?

If you had a dry verm layer, and you sterilized properly, it's most likely the syringe (print came from a contaminated area), or it slipped in when you inoculated.
