Shopping malls
    #2177048 - 12/14/03 04:45 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

editor's note:  This definately has a slopism sentiment to it
:ooo:

I was at a busy shopping mall the other night, and I was just taken aback by all of the people mindlessly wandering around.  Every once in a while, my internal dialogue quiets down enough for me to become lucid and aware of my surroundings.

I observed hundreds of people soley focused on buying things that they didn't really need.  It seemed so damn alien to me.  These incredibly complex beings with a very finite amount of time on this earth, choosing not to explore truths or further humanity or use their minds to solve problems, but to cross a few names off of their shopping list... :frown:

I'm rambling now and I don't really have a point.  Wait, yeah I do, I just can't express it.  It's when I become cognizant of everything going on around me, that I am forced to recognize how beautiful and complex everything truly is, and I just want to marvel.

MARVEL!!!

I enter thought patterns like this and it becomes completely unfathomable to me why people settle for the things they do in this life.

I'm so there with you right now. Goes for my own life too of course. But what if there is nothing to ultimately comprehend? Shopping doesn't seem so bad then?

special ed's inner monolouge as we walks around mall:

"I observed hundreds of people soley focused on buying things that they didn't really need. It seemed so damn alien to me. Jessica Swanson's (average 18-35 consumer) inner monolouge:

"Hmmm, I wonder what kind of music Ricky likes, well...U2 is pretty good, and alot of people like them, so thats what I'll buy for his christmas present! awesome! I hope he likes it, wow..he is so dreamy, I think I'm falling in love"

My inner monolouge while in mall:

"Crush kill destroy, crush kill destroy, crush kill......"

Ed: those people in malls (mauls) don't only wander around buying things, they have entire lives.

Shopping malls are a great place to see people for the mindless drones they are.  I worked in a mall last Christmas season and I got to watch the mad blitz of consumerism that starts suddenly on the day after Thanksgiving & then stops just as suddenly when the last after-Christmas sale ends.  (I "worked" at Mrs. Field's, so don't feel sorry for me.)  I moved away from my family & my friends aren't into the gift exchange thing, so I'm (thankfully) exempt from all this shopping crap this year.

I had an epiphany last year & have felt the same way ever since.  I'll stop & just look around at how amazing everything is.  Kinda like in American Beauty - that's a great movie.

I'm not so much surprised by the masses wandering around oblivious to this beauty as I am saddened.  Then these fucks act like they know better & tell us how to live, not to do drugs, stay in school, etc.  I just listen to their bullshit & laugh to myself at how much they're missing out on.  They're so clueless they don't even realize that they're clueless.

You can make an analogy; what if most people spend their entire lives shopping for something they'll never be satisfied with?

You people are always dis'n ppl for wandering around aimlessly, being "Cattle" or "consumerist" without purpose. And then you go on to say that you just want to "marvel," to purposlessly enjoy what you have been given.

double standards? hypocrisy?

I like it when people see one aspect of someone's lives (buying goods at the market place) and then make all kinds of assumptions about how mindless these people are. It could be that there is more to these people than meets the eye, you judgemental fools.

I love all the tactics malls use to zombify you; the lighting, the colour scheme, the air, the muzak, the outlay, its all a trap to keep you in there until you need to buy something in a pathetic attempt to keep your sanity.

its like a release - ahhhhhh, now I can leave this place, now that ive eaten a plate full of slimy Chinese fast food and bought a new baseball cap.

This post wasn't judgemental about people. I understand your interpretation. I just think shopping malls are symptomatic of something that is very, very wrong.

Judging these people by their appearance...I dunno, when I see a blonde woman who is unhealthy thin, has all sorts of make up on, is dressed in designer clothes, and Scampers around in a frenzy, then yes, I do judge them on their appearance

i wanna rock with you....I wanna groove with you...

I dont see anything wrong with consumerism, but there is something wrong with malls, they are horridly uncool. A really lame way to organize the way we spend money. I like downtown way better, it provides more diversity in the shops, it seems like malls all have to conform to some ugly, plastic visual aesthetic.

Leonardo DaVinci referred to such people as "meat machines". They are sleep walking through life and comprise the better part of humanity. I was six years old before I realized that there were other people who are sentient.

Oh my... this reminds me of that time I was banned from the mall...

All I was doing was telling the people stuff along the lines of what SpecialEd is bringing up here.  Of course, I told them through a bullhorn.

Most people scuttled off looking confused.
It's to be expected.

Sigh. Okay, I have to give my rendition of going to the mall. Yes, I've seen what y'all have seen. But here's what I also see:

I see people in various stages of life, acting out the parts they are playing for that stage, the grandmother, the mother, the child, the father, etc.

See, even if life here on this planet isn't perfect, we are all still human beings, in different transitions. I don't believe people are "drones". Maybe their focus is in the wrong place, but calling them "drones" just sounds so much like a racial slur or something.

I see me at a mall, and anyone else at the mall could look at me and think I'm a drone. When you see these people, they may be just like you, but wanting to go shopping for someone they love as part of the tradition that we have adopted at Christmas.

Going to tell a story:

Once, I took a mediation training seminar. One class, the instructor told us to find someone in the room who looked like they had the least in common with ourselves.

I looked around the room, and I didn't see anyone who looked like s/he had nothing in common with me. There were all ages, and dress, etc.

A woman walked up to me and said she thought she and I had the least in common. She was a welfare mom with several kids, going to school. I was an attorney.

She said she thought that I was an "Irvine wife" who got bored and went to law school because my husband was an attorney and I needed something to do.

The truth was, I initially went to school because I was a single mom on welfare and I decided to go to school in order to support me and my kids instead of looking for a man to do it for me. So she and I actually had a lot in common.

The point being, when you go to the mall and look at the "drone", that drone might be you.

A few days ago the nearby Shopping Mall just got electronic talking garbage cans that say things like "Thank you, and Goodbye" and "Thank you for not littering." in the food court. Freaked me out for a second, and had me thinking "The future is now."
