possible late harvest; cap wilt; black on cap; edible?
    #21769904 - 06/06/15 10:43 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello all,

I am just getting through my first flush.  Mazapatec spores, brown rice cakes, shotgun tub, 74 degree temp.  Keeping humidity at the right level was an issue at times - so there were a couple days where humidity was probably too low and too high, which I assume contributed to smaller fruits and yield in general.

Yesterday, caps were really starting to open and there was some bruising on the stems that I attributed to misting too low; however the caps were not wilted at all.  This morning, some of the caps had begun to wilt and black powder (what I surmise is spores) had fallen.

From what I have gathered from other posts is that wilting of caps and dropping of spores implies that the life cycle has come to an end and fruits should have probably been harvested a day or two before.  Accordingly, I harvested the fruits today and am beginning the drying process.  My question to the community, based on the pictures I have posted, is whether these fruits look edible.  I am mainly trying to rule out rot or bacterial blotch.  Any help in identifying potential problems with these fruits would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

those are spores. no PF,BRF,SGFC TEK says to measure humidity or even have a gauge in your SGFC. Humidity in a SGFC should fluctuate between 50 and 100. the surface of the cakes less than a few millimeters from the surface will always have 99% which is the only 99% we need to worry about. surface humidity. the dunk and roll and you misting a couple to a few times a day depending are what keeps surface humidity 99% if you put a humidity dial in your SGFC you'll just get meaningless numbers that cause you to "fix" things that don't need fixing,

nice job.

Those don't look too bad IME with BRF cakes. I always had small fruits. Even with a good SGFC setup. Truth is with BRF and Muti-Spore it's a genetic crapshoot (the amazing mushie in the middle of the last picture with the spiral gills says it all) and the cakes will give you whatever they want to give you.

My concern from the photos are all the small, not-yet-matured fruits you have on the foil. Harvest your fruits as they mature. Some time right before the veil breaks and before the caps flatten out. Not every cake or fruit is going to be ready at the exact same time with BRF IME.

I see this is your first post. Congratulations on making it this far. If you want more opinions try posting pictures of your setup and just get exact humidity out of your head. If you cased your cake and followed RR's SGFC Tek properly then you have nothing to worry about. Personally I just went two rounds of a dozen BRF cakes to get the feel for cubes then switched to bulk. The cakes, the misting, getting good coarse perlite and whatnot are just too much of a headache for me.

Good Luck and enjoy the new hobby!

This was from my first BRF Harvest

Thanks a lot for the comments. I really appreciate the feedback on the humidity issue and harvesting issue.  I will definitely be posting more pictures as they come!
