Coolest cold hardy cacti or succulents?
    #21769867 - 06/06/15 10:34 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

This year I'm really going for it as far as adding some decorative plants to my front yard and side of house.  Right now I have some Hens & Chicks succulents, they're amazing little plants that require almost no water or nutrients and can survive the cold winter no problem.  Plus they multiply like crazy.

What other cacti or succulents can survive cold winters outside, and look good?  To be safe, they need to be cold hardy to -10 degrees F.

I know Echinocereus sp. can handle hard frosts for long period of times if kept dry. Like -10°C wouldn't be a problem.

You may want to plant opuntia humifusa. This thing is flowering like mad and can survive -30°C frosts. And you don't even need to keep it dry.

yeah, i was gonna say opuntia humifusa too.
also, other than being freeze resistant  ( not cold reistant, freeze!) it's also a good grafting stock, easy to propagate by cuttings, and has distinctive violet fruits, that stay on the plant for long (indefinite time maybe?) and make it look even cooler.

Is that the kind of opuntia you sent me?

I was at four local greenhouses today and found a couple different Sempervivum Hens and Chicks, but not much else in the way of freeze proof succulents.  I'll probably have to order opuntia online to get the freeze hardy varieties.

Sempervivum is a good idea too. I have some outdoors growing in a stone wall. They just don't need attention and they easily survive hard frosts and droughts.

Gymnocalcyium bruchii can take it quite cold, a few other gymnos are frost hardy too, baldianum, gibbosum but you might be pushing their limits at -10f

What about Escobaria sneedii var. leei?

Just did some research on the Escobaria sneedii and wikipedia says it's endangered and threatened due to overharvesting  I'd hate to contribute to the decimation of it in nature by patronizing poachers.  Looks really cool though, would love to have one if it didn't make me feel guilty.

I'm looking into the other suggestions so far, thanks everybody and keep adding suggestions if you have any, I want to be the only person in my county with a badass year round outside cacti/succulent landscape.

I just sunk some Opuntias out into my yard. One of the plants is from a strain that was collected in West Texas in the 1970's, and has been growing outdoors here in the Pacific Northwest, since then. It is super cold hardy, and tolerant of moisture. My friend tells me it has a yellow flower. I'll take a couple snap shots of it later and come back to the thread and post. I can also say, that I have had a gymnocaylacium outside since feb. and it has been ok. (40-50 degree nights) and lots of rain.

The gymno looks like it's having a rough go of it, how long has it been in ground?

Since March..  I had an extra pup-clone, and was like.. outdoor experiment time. lol . . Honestly, I am surprised it is still alive. It had some cool upper 40's days and some heavy rains.
