The Kanna thread. 3

I decided to open a thread for this amazing plants. Back in october/november, I sowed some Kanna seeds. They didn't do that well, became sick, mushrooms were eating them. I put them outdoors and the almost freezing temperatures during 2 weeks completely killed the mushroom infection. Now they look like this :

They start pupping and they grow thick leaves and almost no visible stem.
Show us your Kanna plants ! I'll keep posting updates of my babies. I hope they will flower next year.

Here's a month-old pic of one of mine. I've since separated them and put them outside. I'll have to get an updated pic.

How did you go about doing it? I didn't dare to separate my plants from last year because I presumed the roots weren't strong enough yet. Might have been the reason why they died, too many plants in a small pot.
I sowed some leftover seeds from last year and had quite a good germination rate(75%). Hoping these will survive more than a year!

Wasn't anything to it. I just pulled the whole dirt clod out of the pot and crumbled it away to separate each plant and their individual roots. They didn't even blink at being transplanted. In fact I shipped out two of them to members here and apparently one of them made it. (I think the other died because of being in the mail over a long weekend and getting too hot)
But yeah, go for it, if yours are a few inches tall, I'd bet they will make it okay.

Nice. Mine have pretty much stalled it seems. Hopefully they wake back up and start growing again soon.
Has anyone ever read/heard that Kanna grows with a rhizome and that you should dig it up every winter and store it like other rhizomes? I was reading that yesterday and thought it was odd. I don't really plan on doing that for mine, just wondering if anybody has heard of this before?

Yeah, start em just like cacti. Once they get out of the seedling stage, they don't have to be treated so much like cacti, though...

I grow them in very rich soil. Not like cacti at all. And they need cool temperatures and shade. Otherwise they don't grow, lose leaves, wilt, and go dormant. Higher than 30-32°C will make them struggle.

I've got the rich soil thing going with mine... I think you just nailed it on what made mine turn down the wrong road, though - the temps. I didn't know they didn't like hot temps. It was right after I put mine out on the shaded porch that they took a nosedive. I brought them back in after a while, thinking it was them being shocked somehow from the light increase, and they are hanging in there by a thread.
Do you keep yours indoors or outside?

I keep them outside in the shade witha bit of morning sun and bring them inside when temperatures cool. But they etiolate under fluro lights. I'm trying the windowsill now. I think they could also stay outdoors longer. They are quite tolerant with little frosts. I killed a rust infection by letting them outdoors before the spring.

I love the effects of kanna, I've mixed it with alcohol and with weed, fantastic with both. Never really smoked it byitself.
Looking forward to growing it when I am able to get a garden going.

4 months of winter growth. I kept them at the windowsill but I think they are a bit etiolated. I may cut the ugly growth and prepare some tea before I put them outside. These four seedlings are 1 year and 3 months old.

(There are also two flowering orchids at my windowsill The floral stems are hidden by the huge leaves.)

About two months old, these guys have been pretty easy to grow in the windowsill and they have beautiful foliage. Some got more leggy, but most are quite branchy. I'm excited to try them when they get big enough.
