The Egg by Andy Weir

I saw this short story mentioned somewhere and thought i would post it so you can all read it. I know a lot of people here can relate to this concept
Quote:
The Egg by Andy Weir
You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.
“Are you god?” You asked.
“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”
“My kids… my wife,” you said.
“What about them?”
“Will they be all right?”
“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”
You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty. “Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”
“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”
“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”
“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”
“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.” You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”
“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.” “So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”
“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”
I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.
“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”
“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”
“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”
“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”
“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”
“Where you come from?” You said.
“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”
“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”
“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”
“So what’s the point of it all?”
“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”
“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.
I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”
“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”
“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.” “Just me? What about everyone else?”
“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”
You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”
“All you. Different incarnations of you.”
“Wait. I’m everyone!?”
“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back. “I’m every human being who ever lived?”
“Or who will ever live, yes.”
“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”
“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.
“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.
“And you’re the millions he killed.”
“I’m Jesus?”
“And you’re everyone who followed him.”
You fell silent.
“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”
You thought for a long time.
“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”
“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”
“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”
“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”
“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”
“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”
And I sent you on your way.

A little less mind blowing when you Google the author and find out he's making a movie with Matt fucking Damon.

Great short piece and it closely aligns with how I see such things.
I liked his book The Martian, it is a very well researched and plausible fiction, as far as the science contained within is concerned. I wonder how the movie will be; I didn't really get a Matt Damon vibe from the protagonist of the story but I guess we'll see how it works out.

it's true but trite. truth with no soul often is. preaching is... probably the only sin. but luckily i'm a sinner, though. just not with truth. you don't preach with truth, you preach with sin. that's how you preach the truth. to speak the truth you must adhere to it's inaction.

I love this story. I can't remember. The first time I read it. Years ago. But I've shared it with many people I know I really just love everything about it.

Its not all that logical though. Clearly we all have a separation of sorts also. At the same time even. My take is we're being weeded out/tested individually

I like to believe the we're all one consciousness Idea, but I don't think it's that simple

Idon't really read into it like it's the by means truth but I think there's a lot of really good points in it. Basically like a religious text ya know. Just be a good person.
The cool thing is that you are or were that person. Every injustice, every amount of pain, every wrong you did to yourself. I thought that was really cool. A very thoughtful and good piece of writing.

we're not all one person though. but we all live by some incarnate human force. i'm just saying the story is kinda... one sided. it's not really got any depth. it's still kinda touching though, i'm not really trying to diss it or anything.

We might be. Who knows I don't. I believe in reincarnation. Young and old souls. Sometimes you meet people that are just wise beyond the short amount of time they've been here.
Just my beliefs though no need for you atheists to come in here and bash me proving something that really can't be disproved as nobody truly knows.

Well yeah its neat but so is the easter bunny.... I really think its more accurate to say we are all connected
Like.... looping around time with all these reincarnations... ay ay ayyyy Personally, im feelin pretty fresh here on earth... like... a first timer. I mean, even the math of soals to current humans doesnt add up to any kind of sense to be flipped around to different times. seesh

I wasn't saying I agreed with the story, just clarifying that we're not eggs plural, we're one single egg, according to the story.
But i'm on the same page as you I think, I wish the story explained how it was possible to all be the same person instead of god being a cheeky cunt and being mysterious.
Because yeah, lots o holes in this story.

it's as mysterious as it is redundant. we are all eggs and we have a make-belief egg we want to make. the story might as just say that.
yeah we all do.

From what ayahuasca taught me there is some truth here. "we are one" Is the resounding message. In that , we come from the same source, and as the essence of that source, we return. Connected individuals

A cluster of mushrooms come from the same mycelium, but can produce drastically different fruit bodies, even to the point of albino / other mutations.
If we are all one, we are the fruit bodies, and the "one" is our mycelium so to speak, whatever that may be.

Just my beliefs. After having read AL the major books. I'm a big fan of taoism which has nothing to do with God but I also believe in reincarnation. Your not going to change my mind on it so there's no point in trying.

I think the egg is a possibility, but is also a little humanized to make it more entertaining.
I'm a pantheist so I do believe in the idea of one soul. I see it as one large cosmic soul, beyond species. So even all those poor ants you tormented as a child
-------------------- Aaa...E I O Uuu...A E I O Uuu..A E I O uh Uuu.. *Cough* *Cough* Ooo...U E I O Aaa...U E I Aaa..A E I O Uuuuu... At first sight, The Perfection of Wisdom is bewildering, full of paradox and apparent irrationality.

I can dig it
I'm not saying I believe the mycelium thing, just trying to make sense of the "one" existence in the story.
Some people are just straight disconnected from humanity though, like the charles manson type people.

Oh ya. I used to shove fire crackers in an ant Hill. One time I found this pretty damn big beetle for being in Alaska tied him to a bottle rocket and lit that shit. Bugs don't have souls fuck all that. I stay as far away from bugs as possible. Why I hated going further south. Like Florida and Arizona.
Mosquitos are the worst I still have scars on my right arm scratching it when I was a kid. Fuck them. I've killed a lot if them I'd guess we'll over 1000

Try living in Minnesota dude. Land of 1000 lakes. Mosquitos lay eggs in still water..
You know how much fucking still water there is in MN? Fucking billions of gallons, maybe trillions, I don't even know how much. Too fucking many.

Fuck certain bugs then, fuck those parts of myself, if bugs are me.
If I'm mosquitoes and ticks and parasites, I should kill myself for the good of the world. If I could suicide bomb all of those bugs away I would. Even just mosquitoes and ticks, If I could suicide bomb all of them at once, I'd die for that cause.

Ya I don't do it anymore beside swatting the occasional bug that's bothering me. But I absolutely did. There really aren't any mosquitos here which were the biggest offenders.
Bees aren't a thing anymore I've seen one.
Spiders creep me out I've seen some pretty big ones but let them go there own way.
But honestly I haven't really been seeing any at all recently and it's summer. Must be global warming

I can't honestly remember the last time i saw a bug that I was like ya no fuck that. A couple flies by my trash can but ya know flies are just flies. Annoying but whatever.

Good ups for letting them live, I fucking love spiders, they really don't do any harm to humans on purpose, if some giant mother fucker fucked up your home you'd bite him too. Fucking fascinating creatures, they have venom potent enough to kill an elephant ( think brown recluses can idk for sure) and they can be the size of a penny and kill a man, and their spider webs are stronger than steel.

Ya see even putting my finger on that image gave me the creeps. I think I'm more scared of them than they are of me. They say you kill a spider It's gonna rain. I have killed plenty one summer in Alaska I killed a fuck ton as they were everywhere. It rained every day.
Obviously not buying into the myth but the coincidence is funny.
Now a days I just go my way and they go do whatever creepy spider shit they do. It honestly feels like there are considerably less bugs around.
I know bees are on the point of worth significant money.

Some of you are over-thinking this. The piece is hardly long enough to be called even a short story, so asking more exposition of it misses the point. It illustrates a perspective, hell call it metaphor if you prefer, succinctly and directly. No need to over-analyze it.
I wholly disagree with whoever characterized it as "trite". If you see it as some kind of pop-spiritualism perhaps that is more due to your own cynicism. It resonates strongly with me.
