any GoPro users here??
    #21768568 - 06/06/15 01:32 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

TL;DR - anyone in the know how with GoPros and SD cards/recording HD content??

need to talk to someone or find some info about resolution, recording modes, frame rates and the required memory cards to get for a hero 4 silver gopro.

the problem is that i bought a new gopro and jsut got any memory card for it, only later to find out that to be able to record properly in the HD levels of definition (1080, 1440, 2.7k), you have to have some kind of ridiculously fast write speed on your memory cards. and those top level memory cards cost a shit load.

if you try to record with memory cards that have a 'write speed' that is too low for whats recording, the camera basically shuts down. with my current set up, filming in 1080p wide mode, with 60 frames per second, the camera can only record for about 50 seconds before it shuts itself off. and it has a tonne of spare memory left, like 50 minutes recording time. but just the card isn't fast enough to sustain any recording above 50 seconds it seems, so it automatically just cuts out. which is a major pain in the ass

it means i either have to reduce my defintion/frame rate, or go upgrade the card to one of the top level cards. so mostly trying to find out the best option here

people were saying you need atleast 60mbp/s write speed to handle all the top tier HD recording formats. and the shitty thing is that they are dodgy in how they sell the cards. on the front it will say " 80mbp/s " -- which seems like more then enough. but this is the READ SPEED, not the WRITE SPEED, which is much lower. and the write speed is what matters for recording. kind of like false advertising.

in general the gopro's are a bit of a money sink. cos you pay all the money for the camera, and then to even use it properly you need to buy chargers, memory cards, other add-ons and additions. when you buy the product off the shelf its un-useable in its current format which i think is bs. like you cant even turn the thing on or do anything with it because it has no memory card. they should atleast sell it with some kind of basic card attached so it atleast functions when purchased.

but basically i'm trying to work out where the balance is between a moderately priced memory card, and a decent picture quality/frame rate with full functionality on a gopro hero 4 silver. I.e. recording non stop

anyone in the know how with GoPros and SD cards/recording HD content??

I can't help you at all, but i'll reply with a question anyways

what is the difference between a "GoPro" and a regular camera? do they function differently? don't all cameras need memory cards, chargers, lenses, etc?

its just weird that everyone calls their cameras gopros now. i never heard people calling their ca

gopro is just a brand/type of HD recording camera thats become popular. like an iphone or w/e.

i'm sure all cameras have memory cards in the same way, but i also think that different models of cameras are going to have their own issues in terms of compatibility and capability too.

kind of like comparing different engines in different cars, not an even comparison type of thing.

so what works for one other type of HD camera may not transfer across to the gopro.

cameras are so expensive. i have a buddy who payed something like 450$ just for a lense. it was as big as the camera basically

the gopros seem neat though. i looked at their wiki page. they seem like they are super modifiable and rugged

yeah dude cameras can cost a shitload. particularly professional setups. exactly as you said, all kinds of additions and different lenses that do different things. and other stuff to develope photos, edit photos, all kinds of stuff.

the gopros are pretty cool. they're super small too. like maybe an inch and a half tall and 2 and a half inches wide. im pretty sure they're just a bit of a fad though like iphones and the like, and that one could probably get better value for money or performance out of a proper brand/model camera, but ehh, it works!

i was mostly drawn to buy one by the audio recording capability of the gopro as silly as that sounds. it records audio in a way that is more truer to a life like representation of the sounds. like if you record at a venue/festival on an iphone or lesser quality recording device, the sound doesn't come out anywhere near what it actually sounds like in person. that was the main thing that lead me to get the gopro, cos i take alot of footage at shows and festivals and stuff and like to have good quality recordings, particularly for audio and bass

okay good, what settings do you usually record on?

also my main concern is particularly about memory cards and write speeds, not the storage of the card.

my go pro 4 silver's recordings are cutting out at about 50 seconds with the higher defintion settings

I used it only once for a long time. I don't remember what setting it was, but it never cut off on me.

Here's a comment on this site:

Will a lexar 633x 95MB work well with Hero 4 or is it an overkill?

It works well. The 95MB/s in their specs refers to the read speed. They don’t publish the write speed. It’s slower than that, but it’s fast enough to work well in all video modes in the GoPro HERO4 Silver and Black editions. It’s on GoPro’s list of recommendations, and I’ve used it without any problem.

i was looking at alot of the models you've mentioned there. it seems that for hte ultra high HD content you need a type of sandisk card thats not listed there called the extreme pro, which has a write speed of around 60mbp/s , which is enough to cope with the HD content i think

but in realtion to the quote, see thats whats dodgy about it! the write speed, which is what is actually required to facilitate HD recordings is the crucial information. on the front they put these big read speeds that make not much different to the performance of the card at all.

i was looking at the list of recommended cards and investigating them. but i also wanted to speak to someone who knew about the settings too and write speeds in particular.

like you can set the resolution at all different settings of 720/960/1080/1440/2.7k/4k.

and then in excess of that you can set the frame rate of the recording to levels between 20-60ish frames per second.

and obviously with these two settings, the higher you push them the more faster write speeds your going to need for the memory card to cope with them.

was trying to get more info based around this as to write speeds required to maintain these levels of definition, and then link that to the required cards. or atleast work out what is viable.

as a side note theres also wide, medium and narrow mode, and im not sure if these modes also put more burden on the memory card. i.e. running 1080p @ 60 frames in " wide mode " which is probably max settings and unsustainable. compared to possibly running 1080p @ 60 frames in " narrow mode " which would be sustainable. trying to find that kind of information basically. i gotta learn it all properly and work it all out is all. kinda hoping to cheat and find someone with the know how already so they can just tell me it and prevent me having to research it and work it all out etc

my inkling with my current card is that i think 1080p @ 30 frames should be okay...

lol you should be fine. I was fine when I was recording

Quote:

The speed at which data can be written also depends also on the file sizes of the data you’re writing. The speed ratings provided by manufacturers are sequential write speed. They don’t typically divulge for a different kind of writing: large-block random data. That figure is typically significantly slower than the sequential write speed, and it explains why, when the GoPro HERO4 Black maxes out at 60Mb/s (7.5MB/s) and the Silver at 45Mb/s (5.625MB/s), you need a card with a speed rating that’s much higher than 7.5MB/s or 5.6MB/s (ie. they’re measuring two different kinds of data writing).

Mb/s stands for megabits per second. MB/s stands for megabytes per second. There are 8 megabits in 1 megabyte.

yaya thats good info there.

and then i need to link that back to how much of this Mb/s and MB/s applies to the different recording modes and work out waht my shit can handle properly.

they make it so confusing though like fuck make it simple cunts! lol

but yeah i'll keep my eye on it and see how i go.

i bought 2x64mb extreme cards from this ebay vendor and its way passed its delivery day and sent off a pls explain complaint through ebay. will see how that turns out. i need it sorted soon though cos im going on holidays and need the camera working for that
