What kind of pans are these?
    #21767146 - 06/05/15 06:46 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I'd really like to investigate these more. Found them by the thousands in a local soccer field last year. Got lazy and never got an ID on what they are. Couldn't get a proper spore print, as you can imagine, but the mature gills are pitch black. I suspect they are fruiting again this year, and wonder if it is worth collecting.

I realize this is a mixed collection. I'm referring to the specimens with the twisted and closed off caps.

Could be secotoid Panaeolus fimicola.  Check for sulphidia on the gill faces.

You need sulfuric acid and vanillin to do this effectively - it turns those cells red.

If you evaporate off the alcohol from vanilla extract, you should be left with pure vanillin.

What concentration of H2SO4? im guessing 90%+ as this sounds like a variation of the Marquis Reagent, where the aldehyde is vanillin instead of formaldehyde.

Have you tried looking for sulphidia in sulfuric acid and vanillin?  I doubt that its necessary, just that it might make it easier.  I'd leave it at Panaeolus without more info...
