Current BRF cake update, plus some questions about dangers during pinning stage.
    #21765345 - 06/05/15 10:29 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So I put 7 cakes in my SGFC.

3 weeks in, no progress, no pins.

I was having some problems with getting the tub to stay at 99% humidity. It kept drying out (80% humidity).

FAE has been completely fine.

Noticed one of my cakes had a BAD tricoderma infection.
So I removed it.

I cut into the cake to remove it, and noticed that there was a good deal of wet rice un-eaten by the mycelium. Basically, it wasn't done consolidating. Disposed of the cake.

The other 6 cakes are fine, no contams, seem to be fully consolidated. One or two has some slight blue bruising due to being dried out, however...

Fixed the humidity problem. Wet my perlite properly (did it half-assed before)

Currently, am able to maintain 99% humidity! With fanning, even with an electric fan in the room (not in the tub) just to encourage more airflow in an otherwise EXTREMELY stagnant room.

So humidity and FAE are currently great, but it's only day 1 of that. Do you think the 3 weeks of being too dried out may have killed the cakes?

They still smell fine and look healthy...

If not, when should I expect pins?

Light situation is fine... 6500k blue bulb, although I'm not sure if the lumens are that high. Just a single bulb. Also some indirect sunlight getting in there. It's on a timer, 12 light/12 dark.

One of my main concerns is the temperature maybe being too high.

For example, at night, it's about 75-80 degrees. During the day, it's about 78-90 degrees. I have no way of controlling the temperature in my current grow room.

I am misting and fanning 5 times a day, every 3 hours. However, they go completely ignored, un-fanned and un-misted, for the entire 12-hour dark cycle.

I'm pretty sure that I am, from this point on, going to be maintaining 99% humidity though.

Anyway thanks, any input is greatly appreciated!

The temp is fine. They don't need 99% humidity. They need to dry out in between mistings.

Ah, so they need to dry out several times a day?

I knew evaporation was a huge pinning trigger, I just wasn't sure on the frequency of it.

Does it matter how long I allow them to be dry?

(Just checked, the cakes are pretty dry, but the tub itself is still 95-99% humidity (shitty analog hygrometer) and there's water droplets on all the walls.)

Water droplets on the walls means the temp inside the box is different from outside. Makes sense since they are creating heat. I would try using your current every three hours schedule, except only fan every other time, no mist. That should initiate pinning for ya!

Water droplets have nothing to do with humidity. They're condensation. The dew point is relative.

Humidity should dip as low as 50/60% in a sgfc regularly

I've never seen a pf tek saying to have or look at a humidity gauge rather than your cakes. Next time follow directions to the t
