benefits of layering versus mixing in outdoor beds?
    #21765213 - 06/05/15 09:45 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I see alot of people that say they like to layer their spawn in the substrate outdoors. I usually mix. I always figured more inoculation points allthroughout the substrate would help it to colonize more evenly. I can understand a nice layer of spawn would colonize nice and thick in that area but then it has to branch out up amd down throughout the sub from there at points where there arent any inoculation points. Does it make for a better flush in you opinion?  When i mix the whole sub ends up colonized all the same. Aside from burying the spawn to keep from pests is there really an advantage?

Not what you asked, but I've had great success just spawning to bulk in a large monotub with no holes and just dumping the colonized block out in a hole.

I think layering is forever outdated. If you're using grains just put a casing on top to detract animals. Pf jar spawn can just get a layer of straw over top. Other than that what benefits do layering have? More inoculation points is better
