Mr. Fox's Panaeolus cambodginiensis var. "Sandose"

Oi!!!! Hey everyone, Its been awhile since I've posted a grow log, sorta got lazyy. Anywho.. During my mellow I've cultured out some Pan cam.

Once isolated from contaminants, I Tiger dropped onto some juicy Rye Berries heh,

Here they are 100% colonized!!

For this run I planned on using a 18gal "roughneck" monotub with a sub consisting of: Horse manure/Sheep Straw Coir, Vermiculite, & Gypsum at a 3" sub depth.
So here we are 1 day into colonization after spawning to bulk.

2 1/2 days after spawning..

Last night I prepped my casing layer. Went with 50/50 jiffy mix & Coco Coir with about a quart of additional vermiculite to the mix. Topped it off with a 1/4 cup of gypsum to buffer the 7.5 Ph.
Here we are today 6/5/15

Update:

Will probably need to patch in the morning at this rate.

I am currently attempting my first bulk grow
I planned to use coir/spent coffee/gypsum, Verm
No Poo related things However I'm interested to know if working with Manure is something I should wait to be more experienced for. Or something I should get into? I'm currently prepring my grain jars for inoculation

If you can do coffee you can do poo. They need the same requirements of proper pasteurization. For my first grow I skipped the pf tek and coir and did pure horse manure spawned with bird seed. Worked out great. Must have been beginners luck too though

What are you trying to cultivate? Cubensis or Cyanescens??
Working with manure isnt any harder than pasturizing CVG.. IMO
But go with what you feel more comfortable with. Maybe try CVG this round, then try implementing manure into you next bulk grow.

You know how they say genetically speaking mushrooms are more similar to animals then plants? Well just like us they need in order: air, water, food. Note that food is the last thing they need. When they're colonizing the order is more like water, air, food. Manure is so popular for 2 reasons but the biggest reason is it holds a shit ton of water. (lol pun) The second reason being with the right mix of hay you get a great c/n ratio (carbon: nitrogen) and they hay alleviates the density allowing trapped air to remain accessible to a growing mycelium. As long as the supply of water and oxygen never runs out (without being enough to drown it) You can spawn to just about anything. All the little mods and tweaks you see on here(gypsum coffee, lime, oyster shells etc) are cultivators fine tuning their grows to get every possible ounce of mushroom out of there grow, but their grow is not dependent on those factors. While you're starting out keep 100% of your focus on water content and FAE and you'll do great! (also sorry for participating in this thread jacking Mr. Fox lol, I can't wait to see how your pans do)

Glad to have you aboard, myco
I lightly mist daily (2-3 times) just to keep the moisture up. At the first sight of pins I'll completely stop misting & lower my Rh to 70-80%

I was just curious. It seems your doing great. Theyre really not all that hard. As long as you are light with your misting and they fruit, your home free. And exactly, misting after will ruin them real quick. All the moisture they need is in the substrate.
I cant wait to see your first pins , its great seeing them for the first time, they're so small at first but definitely put on some size. If you dont get many pins on the first flush dont be disappointed, my first flush was real spotty on my last trays. The second flush or wave of pins filled out nicely.
How deep is your substrate, I dont think itll matter to much with more surface area but some have issues , some dont with thicker substrates. I did.
I recently started a dozen modified Pf jars with manure using prints from my last project. Also a manure water/karo Lc

Great job bro, that said .. you did everything right and got them to fruit, but it looks like those odd genetics were the caps are big early and they dont get that tall. Kinda kss looking. Also they look wet, my caps are always dry looking but the fruits aren't dry per se . Yours look wet, this could cause them to stunt for sure. It could just be high humidity in the chamber... Give them a ton of air and let thay surface dry a bit, you probably wont even need to mist for the second flush. They Definitely dont need dunking. Im just throwing ideas at you bud and trying to help
Ive never had fruits like that but ive seen it on the omc a few times. Sometimes the second flush is normal , hopefully they are just looking like that from here but either way they are powerful !

Myco!!!!!

Yeah I feel like a may have over misted, or it could be genetics like you said...
Im definitely learning Panaeolus is far more finicky than Cubensis..
Hoping things sort themselves out, after an increase in airflow. (I completely removed the poly from one of the top holes before I left this morning) Ill be home to take more pics in 2hrs or so..

I have had cyans do similar. They didn't get very tall at all but did develop some fair size caps. Keep the FAE really high. Ya want dry heads with these.

Your casing looks pretty deep, that might be the issue. For pans it should be 1/8" -1/4" max..

Dont be upset buddy , you fruited them and thats the hardest part when you are on your first attempt.
I really think its either too wet or genetic. I dont think its the casing , if it was it would have not pushed out more than a cpl or any fruits im thinking.
Regardless its a learning process and if you dont mess anything up, you wont ever understand whats nedded and whats harmful. If it is excess moisture , this is easily resolved and if you dont mist at all between this flush and the end of your second you should see normal fruits. " if thats the problem " if the same thing happens again, then you are very much were you need to be, doing everything correctly and you just got the short straw with genitics.
After this , if you want I can send you a Goliath print from my last project. Fruits came out great so now that you have a feel you should have no issues starting a new after this grow runs its course. Let me know and dont let a little pot hole slow you down :-)
It does suck though when you spend so much time and have issues at the end doing everything you could. I got lucky years ago buying from a great vendor and never having a genetic issue and printing from there to keep straing going.

Wow Myco,

That's the best feedback, regarding my situation Thank you!
Esp. for giving me the run down on how I can slim the odds to aid in finding the culprit. Wether it be genetic, or moisture.
Im definitely going to give the sp. another shot.
gonna shoot you a here shortly,

Nice harvest buddy :-)
They are cute looking mushrooms , definitely enough to have a couple nice trips with & definitely be careful with those...
Congrats and cant wait to see the second flush. Id try seeing if they will mature more. It took about 4 , 5 days for mine on the last grow to get from pin to spore release.

I kinda like their look. Should maintain some size when dried.
Maybe take a clone and see how it performs under better conditions. You probably have a better feel for growing these now that you've succeeded.

You definitely have a good time waiting for you im glad theyre perking up now. Have you tested any yet?
They may dry small but they last a hell of a long time. Be sure to only try 1/2 a gram and work up in 1/10ths of a gram if your sensitive. If your fairly used to taking cube doses of 3 to 5 grams , itll probably be okay for you to go with 1 dry but thats definitely a hefty dose and one strong trip.
Its very clear and the feel is something totally clean. Take too much and things can get downright evil lol When you put a small bunch of pans in your mouth and you taste that "Taste" its real bitter, you will know that your in for a wild ride!
