I love automechanics! My new hobby

Eyo just wanted to say what up to the DIY forum never posted here. I recently got my first motorcycle it's an 83 cb450 with over 40k miles and 4 owners who rode her hard. She wasn't running but I got her going and have replaced most of the exterior bits and cleaned and tuned. Fucking valve tappet nut came off while I was riding and fucked one of the valves up so I'm going to do an entire valve job and hone the cylinders since it obviously has shitty rings and maybe worse.
I've learned so much this past 5 months it's amazing. I didn't even know how an engine worked or what the fuck a camshaft was last year and now I own a few hundred dollars worth of automotive tools and can actually hold a conversation with a mechanic. My car overheated and I found it was the waterpump. In the process of replacing all the timing belt components and it's fucking awesome and frustrating as hell.
The best part is...I actually found a hobby I enjoy

Good too here dude, there's really not a lot too it, just a grown up mecano set with upgraded motor! Investing in tools is such a wise move as long as you avoid buying cheap, we all know that Moto, also having the right tool for the jobs makes things so much easier and faster, nothing worse than struggling with the wrong tools and taking twice as long. Few things I regret are trying to take of extractor/manifolds without taking off the inlet first, sometimes it's so much easier to remove things out the way to get to that 'one' tricky bolt!

You can't imagine how much money you're gonna save. I've turned a lot of wrenches.
A shop will charge me $600-800 to change the plugs on a old z28 with an LT1.
I can do for $50.
Convertible top replacement, Shop $1000. Me, $135 bucks.
You'll see, lol

i installed a new sound stereo, speakers, sub and amp, and an oil pan in my car but I wasn't going to touch anything else. Not until the guys at the shop quoted me 1000 for timing belt and water pump. With my limited experience on the bike I knew I could do it. I pulled off that belt and those fuckers were lying out their teeth. Shit was basically brand new compared to the one I boight. it cost me 180 for the complete timing kit and I'm returning some parts, plus maybe another 100-150 for lifetime guarantee tools that I need for my bike anyway.

It's a pretty slow process, though. I got the bike from a friend and he helped me do all the basic maintenance but now I'm on my own. I've got the manual and youtube but I take forever to do this kind of stuff first time around.

It's supposed to look like that when it comes off. If it looks worn in the least, it's been on for too long. I don't need to tell you about the consequences of a broken timing belt and when they go, they go without prior warning. Hence the preventive replacement. Also, I trust you fitted a new water pump as well?

Yeah I compared the two belts. The teeth on both look about the same. There's no frayed strands or signs of damage. Whatever, already have the new one.
Yes, actually I'm on the computer to find the torque specs for the water pump right now! Finally have time to wrestle the rest of the parts on. The tensioner seems tricky and it's going to be tough to retighten the bolts on the crank pully since they we're locked on there HARD.

Big hollow tube on the end of the torque wrench, so many uses for a hollow piece of steel, one of the best bits of kit I had was a handheld butane torch very handy for heating up rusted bolts.

if you are already going to tear down the whole front of the motor to 'check' the timing belt.. just replace the belt

Yeah, just to clarify the belt, tenioner and waterpump and being replaced. I got the belt over the new parts just now but I cannot get the damn tensioner to tighten down. Inadequate tools and space make this very frustrating.
No, I can't make a vid of the bike for you as I shouldn't run it because one of the valves is about to drop into the cylinder. Also I've removed most of the component pieces so I can't turn it on even if I wanted to

Well there is a special timing belt tensioner wrench but all my guides say you can use an angled needlenose pliers, so that's what I have. It's a multitool so it's kinda bulky and not great for the 1 inche of space I have to work with.

I can't even get the tensioner to sit still so I can rotate the inner spring and bolt that fucker down. It just spins over the bolt.

Yeah I remember this being quite a chore back when I revised the head on my last car. Very little space to work in. I succeeded without the recommended tools, but I can second the profuse swearing, sweating and the bleeding knuckles Coraltrout mentioned.

Make sure you get no air bubbles trapped in the coolant loop after refilling!

I might fuck with it some more. I've never bled the coolant before. I let it run with the heater on and filled through the reservoir for about 20 minutes. Drove it for an hour today and temp was stable
