Controversial Cannabis Treatment Helps 9-Year-Old Boy Speak His First Words
Kalel Santiago, 9, who has autism, spoke his first words shortly after starting hemp-oil treatments. (Photo: Santiago family)

Though Kalel Santiago of Puerto Rico is only 9 years old, he’s already endured some adult-level struggles. At just 10 months, he was diagnosed with the rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, and spent more than two years undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Then came the next diagnosis: severe, non-verbal autism.

“While he was in the hospital, we noticed he didn’t speak at all and had some behavior that wasn’t right, like hand flapping, and walking on his toes,” his father, Abiel Gomez Santiago, tells Yahoo Parenting from the family’s home in Aguada. “But we waited until he was 3 and cancer-free to look at his behavior.”

He and his wife Gladys — also parents to two older boys, now 18 and 20 — did a cram course in educating themselves on autism. They tried various schools and therapies, and eventually found impressive success with a unique surf-therapy school near their home. Then, through an April fundraising event for that program, the Santiagos happened upon a treatment that would quickly change their lives: hemp oil, rich in the compound cannabidiol (CBD), which has been shown, at least anecdotally, to dramatically ease symptoms of both epilepsy and autism.

They took home the tiny sample bottle of spray and began giving their son twice daily doses, as directed on the label, right into his mouth. And the results, they say, were startling: Kalel started talking — in just two days.

“He surprised us in school by saying the vowels, A-E-I-O-U. It was the first time ever,” Abiel says. “You can’t imagine the emotion we had, hearing Kalel’s voice for the first time. It was amazing. The teacher recorded him and sent it to my wife and me and we said well, the only different thing we have been doing is using the CBD.” Soon thereafter, he adds, Kalel started using consonants to connect his sounds. “He said, ‘amo mi mama,’ ‘I love my mom,’” Abiel says. “I don’t know how to thank [the CBD oil makers].”

Kalel with his parents, Abiel and Gladys.

But the product they are grateful for — Hemp Health, from California, which sells for $40 per ounce (almost a three-month supply) — is not without controversy. It’s just one of many CBD oils now marketed as legally attainable alternatives to the much sought-after Charlotte’s Web — the most popularized version of the oil, which is low in THC and and rich in CBD. But it’s made from specially cultivated marijuana (the cannabis flowers). And since medical marijuana is not legal in all states, especially for minors, scores of desperate families from all over the country have moved to Charlotte’s Web’s source, Colorado. In response, Hemp Health and other versions derived from industrial hemp — THC-free cannabis stalks and seeds — have popped up on the web, claiming to be cheap and legal alternatives.

But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would disagree. The agency maintains that such products are unregulated and therefore not proven safe, and that their sale as dietary supplements is in fact illegal. (Though enforcement of such sales, spokesperson Jeff Ventura tells Yahoo Parenting, would depend on factors including “agency resources and the threat to the public health.”) In February, the FDA sent warning letters to many CBD oil manufacturers, telling them to stop making medical claims — like being cure-alls for everything from glaucoma to Ebola — about their products.

In addition, Project CBD, a nonprofit that promotes and educates on the medical uses of CBD, is wary of hemp-derived oils. “[CBD] oils can be effective,” director Martin Lee tells Yahoo Parenting. “We would suggest, however, that anyone who is seeking such products should try to access CBD oil derived from cannabis rather than industrial hemp, which is not an optimal source for CBD.”

Still, what Abiel and Gladys saw that day in the Hemp Health sample was neither threat nor rip-off, but a tiny glimmer of hope. And so far, they say, the results have been nothing short of startling.

Kalel during surf therapy with Dr. Giovanni Martinez.

“He’s been connecting — like he’s awakening to seeing the world,” Abiel says, noting that they have kept up the treatments for just over a month now, and that Kalel continues to make improvements. “He’s looking you in your eyes, he’s been trying to say different things and imitate what we are saying. He’s saying ‘uncle,’ ‘aunt,’ the names of my two kids. It’s something amazing that I cannot explain.” (Regarding the product’s legality, the dad notes, “If we had to go somewhere else to get it, we would. I’d go anywhere.”)

Kalel’s response has shocked others, as well, including his teachers, and even the CBD oil company. “We were really amazed to hear Kalel’s progress, because what they are using is a lower-concentrate product,” Miguel Feliciano, president of Hemp Health’s Puerto Rico distributor, Antonio & Associates, tells Yahoo Parenting. He adds that word of Kalel’s progress has gotten out locally, through the surf-therapy school, Surf4Dem, and that other parents are now asking to try to product.

Kalel’s surf therapist Dr. Giovanni Martinez, a clinical psychologist who has worked with Kalel since Surf4Dem’s inception, has also been stunned by the boy’s change.

“Like his parents, I am also in shock,” he tells Yahoo Parenting. “I never got him to speak, and it was something that was haunting me. Language was something that was missing.” Martinez, who started his surf-therapy school after being inspired by how surfing helped his brother, who has Down syndrome, said he researched the various uses of CBD oil after Gladys asked him about it for Kalel. He told her it was worth a shot. Now he’s cautiously optimistic about how other children may benefit.

“I’m not going to say let’s give this to every kid, because we have to monitor and study it,” Martinez says. “But I am very impressed with his language development. Imagine a mom who has been waiting almost 9 years to hear her child speak?” Though the use of anything cannabis derived continues to be controversial, he believes it is something worth fighting for, given this kind of a result. “To me,” he says, “the story of Kalel is groundbreaking.”

I think this is quite a major development on something that's been quite understood for a while imo.

As for the poll please only answer if there has ever been a diagnosis or even discussion with doctor about possible diagnosis with it being likely although not diagnosed for w.e reason. I am quite curious the results. The specific idea I mention on the quote is this,  "He’s been connecting — like he’s awakening to seeing the world." If you have used cannabis and recieved or discussed the likely possibility of any aspergers or autism spectrum disorders please answer the survey best you can. The results could be quite interesting.
If you have experienced the experience of awakening with the use of cannabis and connecting to the world as well as have autism/aspergers spectrum disorders please answer below
You may choose only one

I thought it would be obvious, but please give a post of your experiences if you vote. I noticed one person voted and would like to hear their experiences.

Also please mention what you choose for your answer.

Well it seems pretty clear to me there can be some medicinal benefits

But only if hemp and cannabis is respected by the person

Many think they are treating themselves and then they are not really, just doing damage

My dad used to smoke for 20 years, he keeps whining about how much it destroyed his life, even though I stopped long ago
funny..

Many people say it sits on the brain for 20 years after you stop if you are a heavy smoker

But eating it is much different, more clearheaded
I liked what it did to me there, I have always had trouble reading books, when I drank weed coffee I could read 50 pages in a row
Bad concentration all my life..

It helped me read books , would read and read, normally I've never been able to read for very long at a time, max 5-10 pages on a very good day, but there all books became interesting

It can have its purposes, it seems that everyone projecting their anger and hate for the drug gets us to think unclear about it and its benefits
A few very resentful people keep sharing their bad stories and projecting onto all the rest of us

Suddenly we cannot think clear, because we always hear their bad stories...

But one thing is clear, cannabis can easily be abused, seen that a lot with many people
It's rarely a good everyday drug, and I don't believe it to be as harmless as smoking cigs in everyday use

It seems to change people's thoughts a lot, they become rebellious
Rebellion can be ok, in moderation, but not in excess

When people become Anarchists, its a lot in excess... society does not benefit from anarchy
But I am not sure weed did that, it seem to in some cases...

In other cases it makes people rebel but more heart centered than anarchy, they come with new models for society, there it certainly can be useful

In cancer patients I have seen a few videos of it being helpful to people, where morphine only gave them nausea
They could see their friends and family again instead of only laying in bed.

We got the problem the gov demonizes the drug, and people with bad experience with it do too usually
I.e. girls that think they saw this and that on it and feared being crazy because they heard one went crazy on it

We get fead misinformation/colored information all the time, so it's hard to make up our own thoughts on weed...

Our parents have used it often too, and they often got a bad experience or two
so they program us with our bad experiences... - everyone in society almost

So noone has their own thoughts on the matter... or very few

Just responding to the beginning post I really appreciate you posting that. Living in an area known for medical use where the system is heavily abused the medical professionals are noticing the same thing. It's taken me a while to learn to start having true respect for it and while it has allowed me to start processing in life I've gone through negative experiences and even push to adapt quite heavy opiate use mainly for pain management, but I can not deny has been a big area of issue to although only after cannabis became a issue when I didn't do anything else. I'd go on, but it's been a ridiculous challenge that is a whole other story unrelated to this.

I just wanted to say thank you for pointing out the merical medicine conception a lot of people in desperation develop ideas of. It creates a bad misconception like the idea of everyone tripped on lsd or even incapacitating amounts of dmt at one (imagine that second one though..) If anything the supposed 'cursed bread' of Pont-Saint-Esprit is an example of what would happen if everyone tripped on lsd at once, which I'll link an article below to understand my reverence. To say the least as the surf doctor says it's not like he thinks kids should just be given pot for similar disorders or other mental development disorders, but he does think this calls for major research.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/7415082/French-bread-spiked-with-LSD-in-CIA-experiment.html

I find it interesting they use a hemp extract, which could contain other unique cannabinoids that are converted to THC or CBD in these plants bred to concentrate their growth to the 20%-30% maximum concentration a plant can develop using up the CBG to make CBC to go on to developing more cannabinoids as soon as they are created leaving close to none by the time the plants mature. Even some hemp extracts (chill cbd oil) has a 20:1 CBD;THC ratio just like the AC/DC cannabis strain. Unfortunately no one cares about CBC (pain management and anti inflammatory) or CBG (useful for intracranial pressure, glaucoma, and I assume circulation and nervous issues) enough to find hemp plants possibly high in these compounds or a way to breed out the DNA that causes a plant to develop the necessary tools to convert CBG into CBC and so on while maximizing the development of either the cannabinoids above. To conclude not only would I be interested in seeing analytic studies to compare hemp to THC, but even further studies to compare a control to various hemp extracts as well as various cannabis plants that range from high CBD to low CBD and high THC to low THC with every combo above possible. Obviously that is not happening for a long time as that would be seriously intensive research. It would also compare plant use to concentrate use keeping the doses the same testing and using math to find an equal potent amount of both.

Anyways thank you again for making that point and I'm going to finish reading your post.

Edit : I definitely had the same change with food, but went from 180 lbs to 140 lbs actually gaining muscle after burning off fat although this was before even medical or even knowledgeable use and actually getting meth laced bud (if you cab believe it I am certain of it) pushed me to go medical after dropping to 125-130 lbs I'm still barely recovered from after some years.

I am curious what's your opinion on microdosing standardized amounts in various cannabinoid concentration?
