You're not a bad employee after all * 10
    #21760914 - 06/04/15 09:42 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I see a lot of threads here about people who are bored at their jobs and fuck off a lot, or fuck up a lot, or basically feel like the job world is a square peg getting jammed up their round asshole. So, I decided to share this bit of my life.

For about 20 years I worked in offset printing - a job I loved most of the parts of, and that paid me really well. Most of the time though, I was miserable, because I always worked for a shitty company. Or so it seemed.

Well, today is the 3 year anniversary of me starting my own business. And in these 3 years, I have learned something. Here it is... wait for it...

All the things that made me a shitty employee and made me unhappy at my job make me fucking excellent at owning a business.

If you were a really excellent golfer, but you were stuck playing jai alai or some shit, would you be happy? Probably not.

So that's it - my big revelation. It wasn't every job I ever had sucked - it was that I am an entrepreneur, and it took me 20 years to realize that fact. Now that I'm doing what I was wired to do, I'm happier than I've ever been, and I realize that the reason I sucked at working for people is because I'm not supposed to.

What I thought was a personality flaw was actually a by-product of the fact that I was trying to be something I'm not. There's noting wrong with having a job and all that, but if that isn't working out for you, maybe it is a sign that you need to get off your ass, learn how to start and operate a business, and become who you were meant to be.

Dude I have been seriously digging into entrepreneurship, the mindset and the lifestyle. I think it's truly what freedom and autonomy are all about. I want to hear more about your journey, your business, and what challenges as well as joys that you've encountered. Please share! Best of luck with your business.

That's my long term goal. School first, get some experience, then start my own business doing repairs, installs, and even work on residential expansion.

I don't mind putting in work. I never have.

Do you know what bothers me the most?

Jobs that are so appealing, but that are so anal about marijuana and facial hair.

It seems illogical to me.

Whenever I change to suit a job, I feel an abundant amount of cognitive dissonance. And so I am torn.

Congrats in shedding the corporate straight jacket. I'm in sales and hate it because I hate working for people especially with 4 levels of management up my ass every day. And the time wasted in useless meetings. With a family the benefits are why I'm still here. They got me...for now.

Its a good move, its the only way to get ahead in the world. But, no guaranteed paycheck, no guaranteed anything. You provide your own health insurance, tools, materials, and find your own customers. For most people the best move is to start by keep their day job and moonlight on the side. When the side job starts to be enough to support you, its time to quit the other job. If the side job doesn't work out, you still have your regular job and a lesson learned.

Owning your own business means putting in more hours than you would have been willing to at a 9 - 5 job. It means weeks with no money coming in but the bills have to be paid. Even if you have a great business plan and do everything right, if you run out of money you may be forced to stop. Make sure you can survive the first few months.

If you make it, the money will be very good and everyone will tell you how lucky you are. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur so do a self analysis before jumping in.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

God dammit I fucking mlove people who transition from salried jobs to business owners. Congratulations man. You're your own man now. No more idiot middle managers that are employees themselves keeping you down. Critizing your work. Making sure you never get better than them so they don't lose their jobs.

Fuck the rat race.

Business. Entrepreneurship. Self employment. Job creating. That's how you build a country. That's how you get rich. The government does everything it can to make salaried work look bad and business ownership look good. Yet only a small percentage of us see the truth.

Keep it up. One day your business will become a key part of the region you live in.

Please do share. I'm in the process of doing my own thing as well. Funny. I've wasted about 6 years (soon to be 7) earning this bullshit degree, that I'll never even use since I have 0 desire to conform and work and hold a job that will slowly kill my soul. I mean, I'm sure I'll have to get a position somewhere since I'll have to get some experience, and most importantly, save money to start up mine.

This is something I'm currently in the process of working on while I'm still in school. It's funny. I've been in school for 6 years (going on 7) earning this bullshit degree that I'll probably use to just get me a job IN ORDER to save money and gain experience. In all honesty, my intent is to not use it at all. Foolish choice? We'll see haha! But I hear ya. Not that I have an issue with working for somebody, but the benefits of waking up everyday and doing what you love (even if you make less money) totally out-weight going to a decent or shit job that pays well. Just my opinion. Then again, I'm a 24 year old who still lives under his parents roof. Guess it's easy for me to have this perspective given my situation.

To be fair I'm sure there are lots of shitty employees here.
I mean there are lots of people who can't handle it.

That is awesome for you. I plan to one day own my own small business.  I always prefer to work for small businesses.  It's the way things work out the best for me.
I'm not a great corporate employee.

I've enjoyed masonry work more then any other job I've had. I didn't. Mind running a restaurant either.  I really enjoy working with my hands and being outside a lot. Oh I did spend a few years as an outdoor grill cook on golf courses.

OP - cool post, not what i expected; really turned a crank in my head.

I understand myself to be entrepreneurial, although have no aspirations to start a small business. I have over the past 5+ years exclusively worked for small businesses and do thrive in the dynamic/evolving work place. It is natural for me to weed out in efficiencies and streamline logistics when I am at work, so working in a strict/static environment would cramp my style for sure. These same character traits surely would pay dividends if i was running my own business. That said, I am a bit of a control freak, so micromanaging things could also be an issue for me.
Any thoughts on this?

I've chosen the academic route late in life. I don't have the desire to open a storefront/service business although it surely would be easier and possibly more cost effective than going back to school at my age. At this point the only business i could see for myself in the future is a consultancy. Who knows?

I concur. All of my jobs except 2 have been for small businesses (people I knew) and they were always more enjoyable to work for. Even if the job itself wasn't something I thoroughly enjoyed.
