I thought I was the one with pop-science understanding of sexuality?
Also, since the difference often lies between the body and the brain why are we treating these people with crude surgeries? Isn't the brain a much more malleable structure? Brain structure can change with drug use, traumatic experiences, etc. It seems much easier to change the brain than the body.
It would seem that way to you because of your ignorance.

First you question my sexuality -- which I never disclosed in the first place -- then you call me ignorant without engaging me in an actual discussion. I think it's fairly obvious to any other poster who the ignorant one here is. I find it appalling, and indicative of the board's decline, that you were able to get a moderating position with such childish behaviour.

You have demonstrated your ignorance on this topic. What, do I need to be diplomatic? Your comment was ignorant.

It's called a discussion. Instead of getting your feelings hurt you can discuss why you think I'm ignorant and perhaps share some information. That is the typical way in which things are discussed. See? I'm doing it right now.

It's not possible or desirable to have a "discussion" with somebody whose mind is closed regarding the subject matter. IMO you should be banned for your comments here, but apparently koods prefers to allow you to "discuss" your bigoted and ignorant views all you like. You should be thanking him, instead you're whining that he isn't validating your hate speech. Bigots are so sensitive, aren't they?

I love how now a days the term "close minded" is used in the most upset way to try to side track and derail a discussion. The man is just explaining himself ya'll are buthurt maximus

Covered by obanacare? What does that even mean? Legitimate medical procedures are covered by your insurance plans. I doubt you have any qualifications to determine what is legitimate.
So, what is really an elective surgery, not a medical necessity, is now "covered by your insurance plans" that are not only mandated by the government, but enforced under penalty of law and the point of a gun, and this seems "legitimate" to you?

Are you in any position to determine what is elective and what is necessary? You have an opinion based on your emotional response not any scientific or academic experience.
Your use of "at the point of a gun" demonstrates you are not grounded in reality.
OMG The tyranny of making insurance available to everyone! Get a grip.

Its SHE... lol and I did the same thing! Went from a huge black guy to an amazon with legs up to my chin. Hormones made my chest grow and I'm afraid that I'm going to end up with boobs like my mom, because they keep growing and getting lower, and lower.... mammograms hurt like a mother. The craziest thing I realized is that I'm going to end an old lady. Never really thought about that till now..
The lower surgery was a piece of cake. I laid on my back and played PlayStation for 2 weeks. Couldn't get stoned though
I probably won't be getting implants, as I won the genetic lottery... my breasts currently fill a 34C and they only just started growing about a year ago. I'm actually a bit concerned at how big they might get in the long run, it would be funny if I ended up getting a reduction. They bounce with every movement I make and tend to get in the way of my arms. But I can't complain, I like having big boobies, they are super fun.

Boobs are fun. But I'm still glad I don't have any. They're like other people's kids. Sure they're fun to mess with for a while but then I get to go home.

They're also distracting whether they're attached to you or not. It's awkward when I find myself messing with them in public. I am sure I will get over it someday but I don't know when. The fact that they keep getting bigger doesn't make it much easier to just put them out of mind. I am wondering where is the limit on this, I have an aunt who wears an H cup for fuck's sake, and she's not fat, nor has she ever had children. I don't know who to talk to about this shit. I need to make friends with more large-breasted women.
Anyway, back on topic, I'm proud of Caitlyn, and have been pleasantly surprised at how tasteful and humanizing her grand coming-out has been, but I dread her show. I am worried that her ex wife has rubbed off on her too much and she'll end up swallowing the whole Kardashian family like a black widow and grow to surpass its bizarre stage whorishness, making all of the rest of us trans women look like a bunch of narcissistic divas. I'm the closed minded one...Yet I'm the only one here who is willing to have a discussion. I think it's obvious who is closed minded here. Being offended at my comments does not contribute to the discussion either.

You called the OP and myself delusional and mentally ill. You don't know either of us and that was literally the first thing you said here. It doesn't tend to be a great ice breaker, just FYI. If you want to slander other posters you should go do that in OTD or the Rompus Room. S&R is a discussion forum.

I didn't call anyone mentall ill. I said transgenders suffer from a mental illness (gender identity disorder) and that indulging their delusions does more harm than good.

I am transgender, so you called me mentally ill, and you called me doing what I need to do to be happy an indulgence of my delusions, which is untrue.
Gender identity disorder is no longer in the DSM. It never belonged there in the first place because a person's identity can't be a disorder or a delusion.
Gender dysphoria is in the DSM, and that is some serious shit, but the path to recovery is to have the incongruent identity validated, not suppressed. The substance of the pathology itself is the suppression of that identity. The major psychiatric and medical authorities agree on this fact, it's borne out by evidence. You were talking about how brain changes can easily be effected by trauma, that this would be more desirable (for who? for you or for the patient?) than changing the patient's body. Are you saying that the appropriate way to treat people suffering from gender dysphoria is to knock them over the head until they can't complain anymore? That's kinda what it reads like.

I think she has been a comedy act for years and it has nothing to do with her gender identity. I think everybody associated with the name Kardashian are fucking weirdo attention whores. That being said you should probably want to know that she is also a jack booted conservative thug like me. Still proud of her?

I am aware of that and it makes me pretty conflicted, I have to admit. It's extremely unusual for a trans woman to make national headlines for something other than getting murdered under exotic circumstances, so she has the opportunity to really push things forward for those of us who are struggling. She also has the potential to set us all back by fifty years, which is a legitimately terrifying thought.
I'm afraid that her reality show is going to be full of her saying weird shit about what it's like to be trans from her own perspective, and cis people who have no other way of knowing about the experiences of trans people will hang onto her every word and think it applies universally. It troubles me that she wasn't willing to reveal her name or request that people use female pronouns until she'd had $4 million worth of plastic surgery and a major glamor shoot, it seems to imply that trans womanhood is defined in itself by surgery, makeup, photoshop, etc. While it makes sense in the specific context of her coming out, I'm concerned that people will think it's generalizable and begin to hold all trans women to the standard she is setting. We have a serious problem with cisgender doctors refusing to provide us with basic medical care because they are uncomfortable or confused by us, and this may actually worsen that problem.
I didn't really know anything about "Bruce" Jenner or the Kardashians (except that Kim has a cute butt and is pregnant like half the time) before this news started to hit and now I feel like I have to be paying attention. I've never been "up" on pop culture in general, now I feel like I'm being dragged in kicking and screaming, since Caitlyn cuts a strikingly relatable figure to me, unlike pretty much any other public personality I could name.

I think you might be right to be concerned. I seem to recall that he (and I use "he" because she was Bruce then) was widely perceived to be a douche when he won the medal. It was a long time ago but I have a sick memory.
