Getting really small fruit body size :(
    #21760165 - 06/04/15 03:14 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello friends,
long time lurker, first time poster! have recently been growing again and have run into some problems, wondering if anyone has some ideas. I'm only getting an inch or two growth from these cubes before they tear the veil and stop growing, here's my set up:

These are wild texas strain. The container is roughly 1sq ft. 4in deep. Colonised WBS spawned to pea straw/cow manure/gypsum, left to fully colonise and then cased with a 50/40/10 peat moss/verm/coir casing. Quite uneven pinning (multispore problem maybe) and the mushrooms are only growing to 1/2 - 1 1/2in before tearing the veil.
I'm wondering if its nutritional issues from my substrate choice (pea straw/cow manure) as I know the recommended straw type is wheat or if thats not the case then maybe the substrate dried too much.
It's growing in a martha style greenhouse, humidity around 90-95%, temps ranging from 22-25C.
Any ideas would be appreciated, peace!

Usually a lack of size is relate to a lack of moisture. Wait for this flush to end and dunk your substrate and see what happens with the second Flush

Larger fruits will come with later flushes.

Did you ask them nicely to grow a little bigger?

Yeah I figured it might be this, the tray sat for a good week before it pinned so it must have dried out quite a lot. Lets see how this second flush goes!

It looks cased. It really shouldn't dry out if you're misting. Casing misting is easy and really lenient. Just keep it damp but not wet.

I generally mist casings once a day in monos. They can take it

Okay I'll try and keep it a little more damp, it's in a high humidity tent so I figured it wouldn't need as much, does look a little dry though, thanks for the tip.

I would pour water right ontop and then drain off the extra after a few minutes. I would wait longer with no casing. be careful not to remove your casing layer accidentally.

I think this is it. Those dont look like there is any problem with your substrate, small mushrooms from too much/too little moisture have funny looking premature caps IMO

Small mushrooms come on first flush, sometimes genetics, sometimes from real dense flushes.

I have this culture that puts up lots of tiny mushrooms, like 1.5-2" first flush, and by 3rd put up massive dinner plate caps

Its just how it goes

That's been my experience thus far.

Tiny fruits at first. Super disappointing. I'm still getting a few, but the big guys have been showing up more and more.

I was advised my sub might be too wet...

Feel how heavy your tub is. lift it up to get an idea of the moisture content

Right?

That would explain the size issue.

Eat them. Small mushrooms are the best anyway.

Thanks for the responses, the little guys sure are potent haha! It's just finished the first flush so I'm gonna let it rest a little and then soak it for a few hours and see if that improves size.

A pan I had with a bit of bacterially contaminated spawn produced very gimpy fruits.

Also, aren't Texans noted for being a small variety?  Of course with a wild print, who is to say if your genetics are even similar to what people call Texans.

I would count your first fush success by yield >10oz per quart of spawn.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...
