Hat pins and the ridiculous money people spend on them.
    #21758761 - 06/03/15 07:20 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I just joined a group on Facebook for a hat pin market. They auction off hat pins and do giveaways every so often.

I thought cool maybe I'll win a free pin or something. Then I started watching the auctions - people are paying upwards of $80 for single goddamn pins!

Is anyone here in to this culture? I think it's EDM mostly that gets down with it. I find it baffling.

People do it in the Jam Band scene too, although I usually see them going for like 10-20 bucks.

I don't own any pins, but if I saw a cool enough one I'd buy it to put on my backpack.

It's jam music I see them in. People call them 'wings' and say you have to earn them for them to really count. People buying them are total cheaters those same people will say. They claim it means they're trustworthy.. some sort of scene popularity or w/e.. It's crap as far as I'm concerned. The earning your wings things I mean. Pins are kinda cool.

People give me pins at fests from time to time and I always get people wanting to buy them off me.

I didn't really care for them, until a friend of mine I met through the jam scene gave me two pins he had designed himself when I started my new job across the country. So that meant a lot to me so I'd probably buy a pin for a friend or something.

I own one pin - a tycho one, and that's about the extent of what I'll get. I agree that there are some nice ones and it wouldn't hurt to have a few. Most of these people have fucking boards on boards of pins though! All costing atleast $5.

dude the amount of money people make on pins is ridiculous

pins started in the jam scene and made its way to electronic music for music like bassnectar, pretty lights, griz, and that whole scene

one of my homies is a pretty good artist and makes pins, prints, and whatever else and hes made a huge name for himself in the bassnectar scene

we took a bus from denver to red rocks together and a few minutes before he got to the lots at RR he said hed be in the lot soon on fb or something and by time we got there, there were literally a bunch of kids waiting for him. he broke his leg recently so he was in a wheelchair and sat there for about 90 minutes and sold most of his pins and made a ton of money. he didnt move an inch. you can make so much money on that shit. like he makes all his money in this scene and pretty much kills it

then theres like pin wars btwn artists lol. some kid who also is real popular in the pin game was there when my homie was selling pins. he sat down next to my friend and tried putting his hand in my friends bag where he was putting all the money. so we watched him and was like dude get the fuck away from that bag

i dont do pins tho. just seems like a waste of money to me

some pins are like version 1 pins too and only like 100 made and they can get really high in price since its like the original version. V2 will be the same design with diff colors and like slightly diff. then V3 will be slightly diff too

wooks be like "oh damn thats the V1, id give you $100 but i got no money so like id trade you this wire wrap and this heady crystal for it" lol

but people will pay retarded prices for certain pins

Hahahahahaha, pins.  The dudes with hats fucking LOADED with pins almost always look shady as fuck.  You could recreate the design for someone else's in demand pin EASILY and sell them for buku bux and make bank if you are shady like that, and there is no way to know if that pin you dropped a bill on is actually from the "limited printing" of the authentic artist.  I regularly see pin makers angrily calling out reproduction sellers on facebook and proceed to make a big deal about it.  Who invented the pin game is a fucking marketing god.

I don't have any pins. I didn't realize there was a market for it but I understand the collectible nature of it.

I would be curious to see some collections

Once bassfreak told me about the murderous, cutthroat politics of the pin market and I researched it a bit.  Found that some idiot once paid like 1300$ for ten pins.  Some of them look cool, but that's crazy.  I bought one at a show once for like 15$ as a souvenir, keep it in a drawer.

whats it look like?

But yeh pins are basically worth what people are willing to pay so you see alot of dumb go for stupid money. But you gotta realize some are like rare and commemorative so theres bunch senimental value to some these that why auctions can go so high. Theres like one bisco pin that goes for like $150 actually theres bunch crazy rare pins that could go for redic money.

that hot air balloon disco pin is dope.  my buddy has a shirt with a similar design.  jigsaw earth, hot air balloon, house dog.  I think there are a few other references in his... spaga I think at least.

I've spent probably close to $400 on hat pins over the years.  Probably close to half of them have fallen off my hat.  These are the remaining pins I haven't parted ways with.

Stupid shit you buy when you are drunk and have too many band shirts I guess.  My friend made all the Umphrey's pins.  He always made good money selling them, much more saturated market now though.

I collected pins when i was like 8 years old or something. Do the pins have to be like (scene) pins or do any old pins work. I'd definitely sell them if so. I also have one of those bird/plane pins like Georgio :ancientaliens:  wears on his suits.

most of them are scene pins

they focus on certain acts like jam bands or bassnectar, Pretty Lights, GRiZ, stuff like that

and all the other ones you typically see are drug related

Pins are worth what people are willing to pay at the moment.

Think of them like baseball cards.  In the future people won't want anything to do with them and may or may not be worth anything.

They are each little pieces of portable art that help people identify with each other.

Each one is beautiful and tells a story.  In that way they are priceless.

It is something to enjoy, not get rich off of, that is the point of art.

I was once gifted a hand-wrapped wire pendant in Austin.  I didn't realize that it was a sign of respect.  I just thought it wasn't that big of a deal.  Cool story gang, I may post a picture of mine later.

Well to tell the truth Austin isn't the place it was even 5 years back.  Lots of hipster douche-nozzles running around.  Then again once you find a group of native Texans you can really find a lot of neat little spots down there.

It only starts to bug me once you start hitting up house parties and people treat you different because you don't wear horned rim black glasses or are a fat guy in really skinny jeans.

I collect at shows/festivals that hold special moments that about it. One of my buddies has spent over $5000 on pins which is crazy to me.

At that point it would make more sense to make your own pins and trade them with other people.

I collect hat pins, and have a 5 lb hat. I haven't spent hundreds of dollars on them though. People like to collect things, be it rocks, coins, cards, stamps, action figures, pins, whatever.... If it makes you happy, who gives a shit? I find it especially funny that a bunch of druggies that piss their money away on chemicals & weed are snubbing their noses at people that spend their money on something tangible.

An experience that fades when the drugs wear off. Then you want more. I don't even want to consider the amount I've blown on drugs over the years. There's a lot more to life than being fucked up. And pins do provide an experience, as do any collectables. If you're into them, it makes you happy. Pins are a form of artwork. Looking at them makes me happy. Looking at paintings makes me happy. Listening to music makes me happy. I get that joy every time. Don't have to pay for more, because I still have it.

Mementos are nice to have.  Eventually we aren't going to be able to remember any of this shit. I still regret throwing out all my rave flyers 15 years ago and when I think back to that time period I remember less and less of it.  Pins aren't expensive, its 10 bucks to help out a head trying to make money.  It's giving back to the community, which I have no problem with.

Ive never really gotten into pinz myself. I mean I have like lit 2 pins. I mostly buy them to give other ppl and stuff you know like you see the perfect pin for someone or summin. I've jus never really worn a hat either since my hair is already pretty much a hat neway so I dont really have place to wear them around. I like t shirts or even stickers more than pins.

im not saying pins suck or anything. some are really cool

id personally rather just take that 20$ and buy drugs with it

i save all my ticket stubs and festival wristbands/schedule booklets for the same reason as you have pins. as a memento, just to remember

if im at a big show and i got print out tickets, ill wait for the show to be over and once people clear out ill look for a ticket stub (and whatever other groundscores lol)

You're not getting it. Just because something isn't ingested doesn't mean it doesn't mean it do anything. This is where druggies lose the plot of reality; thinking you have to take drugs or whatever for something to happen. Not true. If something makes you happy, it makes you happy. When I was in elementary school I found a small toy plane. I liked planes, and it was cool, so I picked it up. It was a warm sunny day, and I spent recess by myself playing with that plane. I'll always remember the warmth of the sun on me as I ran around with that plane on the playground, lost in my imagination. That experience was every bit as euphoric & magical as any drug I've taken....and more wholesome as well, cause it wasn't artificial. This was over two decades ago, and I still remember it fondly.

If you don't like pins then they obviously won't make you happy. People don't need to buy pins, anymore then they need to eat drugs to have a good time. It comes down to whether you want to or not. 20 years from now I'll look at those pins & remember the period of time I bought them. I'll remember the shows, the people, the experiences. The intricacies of the way the Molly & K I took made me feel will be long lost. In fact, the shows that I did get material mementos at are the ones I'm more likely to actually remember well, because I can look at said memento, and my memory is triggered. I've been using drugs for over 15 years, been in this scene for about the same amount of time, and a lot of the fun I had is far back down some twisty road in the backwoods of my memory. It doesn't last.

Frankly I'm far more interested in making new memories with new experiences. Ones that don't involve getting all spun out & buck wild.

another thing for me for why im not into pins, its cuz when i started doing the electronic thing, it was weird, it was underground, and pretty much unknown. people had never even heard of dubstep when i was into it. i liked the fact that it was weird. i like being a little different

i dont do pins for the same reason i dont wear kandi. bc to me, everyone just does that shit cuz other people do too. like obvy not everyone but a very large portion yes. and yea, pins are a million times cooler than kandi, but to me its essentially the same thing just slightly diff scenes

i feel like people do it just bc others do and i really really hate being a follower. i didnt start doing this kinda stuff to fit in

youd never know ive been in this scene longer than most just by looking at me. and i like that. i like surprising people

i just look like a normal person at shows but once you start talkin to me its pretty clear i know exactly what im talkin about

everyone tries to play the part and i just like being a bit different. everyone looks the same with their weird alladin pants and heady hat pins and those scarfs all the hippies wear under their hat

I'll wear tour shirts sometimes, and the hat. But anymore usually golf shirts cause they're comfortable as fuck, especially in the heat.  I'm clean shaven, have really short hair, am muscular....and kinda look a lot like a cop. The Dead tattoo I have is a giveaway that I'm not though. folks will often assume I'm college custie cause I look young for my age, or 5-0. Until we start talking & whatnot. It's funny seeing 20 year olds trying to push their products & acting heady, when in some of the cases I was the one supplying their bosses with L several years ago.

This is why I stopped doing drugs.  Getting fucked up and wooking it hard are fun, but eventually it starts taking a toll on your body/mind.  Going to see music and interacting with people sober is actually a lot more fun than I thought.  I spend less money, remember everything, don't have to worry about doing anything stupid, and wake up the next day feeling 100%.  Its also entertaining watching drunk people act like idiots completely sober, though it does get annoying hearing people repeat themselves over and over again.

i just like drugs cuz it makes a show thats already crazy, 10x crazier

like im not going to a concert to be sober. fuck that. like what is it? school? work? no. im there to have fun my own way

like i guess ill do local shows like not getting fucked up but any big event im going balls to the wall for

if i dont remember a show i really dont care, for me, the show is about experiencing it at its fullest, its about living in the moment. if i dont remember who cares, cuz you were there having a ton of fun when it was actually happened

its like why i dont take videos at shows, cuz i wanna experience it at its fullest. it kinda kills me when i see someome just recording the show and doing nothing during THE best parts of that show. it wasnt meant to be expeirenced thru a 4 inch screen ya know?

Cool story, it's still silly though. For the price of most pins you could by a shirt or food or something of actual value.

Pins have very little practical value, collecting dozens of them like some sort of Pokémon trainer to me seems very materialistic.

My priorities changed as I got older.  I've been to hundreds of shows over the year on every drug you can think of, it's a lot of fun but I have as much fun sober.  Only thing I really miss is being able to stay up later.

yeah pretty much

some pins are cool cuz theyre like made for the festival/event youre at. like an electric forest 2014 pin for example. but like to me thats the extent of how cool it is

most pins people buy are spun decisions and they just look cool like at face value

 that's complete horseshit. Pins have value if you're into them. If you like something it has value. Collectables also have the ability to accrue more worth over time. You could have made the same thread about action figures, and some are worth a lot of money. I was into collecting magic cards when I was younger. I liked them because they looked. Some of the ones I used to own are now worth hundreds to over a thousand dollars. I have enough shirts (which have no more value then pins btw) plenty of food, etc. The reality is I have plenty of money to buy all the necessities, party favors, and pins. I'm by no means broke. Definitely no more silly then blowing all your money on weed, pills & frat parties. :smirk:

I haven't spent $1000's on pins but I do have a few. I don't buy a bunch at one time. Usually just one of its good event and the pin means something to me.

Like this pin of Waldo meditating with a long beard and long hair. i was wearing a where's Waldo costume, because I showed up to this mega rave by myself but was meeting a bunch of friends there. So I made them play the game where's waldo in real life. I found a guy selling pins and he had this pin called 'Waldo Finds Himself!' I thought it was really clever and meant to be since I was wearing the costume. Pins like that hold sentimental value to me. No one talking shit about pins will ever take away the feeling I had while spun outta my mind looking like a straight dork and finding this pin, out of the million pins he had this is the only one I could see on his board.

Didnt you say earlier in this thread that you've only been into electronic music/rave scene for 5 years?!  I went to my first rave 19 years ago and don't consider that I was involved when it was "underground".  Dubstep was in its death throes in 2010.  You may be deluding yourself on some things, bassfreak.

He's still that age where he thinks he's special.  My first rave was like 18 years ago and people were bitching about how mainstream it was getting back then.  I think its a stage everyone goes through in their mid 20s.  Not to say I still don't do it, but at least I can recognize how full of shit I am when I do it (like just now).

bc brostep and dubstep are different

in 09-10 brostep is what was emerging as the new "thing"

its not like america had a scene for dubstep before then. it was a UK thing for years before the US

compared to the rest of the music industry, it was def underground

There definitely was a "scene" for it. I was going to all dubstep club nights in Chicago in 06 or 07.  You just didnt get involved until it was getting mainstream exposure.

lol "mainstream"

its funny how these are relative terms

when i was talking earlier, i was talking about how it was underground, you know, to the rest of society. it was a little different back then. this is simply just a fact

Skrillex won a Grammy in 2011.  I don't think there's any relativity about that being mainstream.
