Hat pins and the ridiculous money people spend on them.
    #21758761 - 06/03/15 07:20 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I just joined a group on Facebook for a hat pin market. They auction off hat pins and do giveaways every so often.

I thought cool maybe I'll win a free pin or something. Then I started watching the auctions - people are paying upwards of $80 for single goddamn pins!

Is anyone here in to this culture? I think it's EDM mostly that gets down with it. I find it baffling.

People do it in the Jam Band scene too, although I usually see them going for like 10-20 bucks.

I don't own any pins, but if I saw a cool enough one I'd buy it to put on my backpack.

It's jam music I see them in. People call them 'wings' and say you have to earn them for them to really count. People buying them are total cheaters those same people will say. They claim it means they're trustworthy.. some sort of scene popularity or w/e.. It's crap as far as I'm concerned. The earning your wings things I mean. Pins are kinda cool.

People give me pins at fests from time to time and I always get people wanting to buy them off me.

I didn't really care for them, until a friend of mine I met through the jam scene gave me two pins he had designed himself when I started my new job across the country. So that meant a lot to me so I'd probably buy a pin for a friend or something.

I own one pin - a tycho one, and that's about the extent of what I'll get. I agree that there are some nice ones and it wouldn't hurt to have a few. Most of these people have fucking boards on boards of pins though! All costing atleast $5.

dude the amount of money people make on pins is ridiculous

pins started in the jam scene and made its way to electronic music for music like bassnectar, pretty lights, griz, and that whole scene

one of my homies is a pretty good artist and makes pins, prints, and whatever else and hes made a huge name for himself in the bassnectar scene

we took a bus from denver to red rocks together and a few minutes before he got to the lots at RR he said hed be in the lot soon on fb or something and by time we got there, there were literally a bunch of kids waiting for him. he broke his leg recently so he was in a wheelchair and sat there for about 90 minutes and sold most of his pins and made a ton of money. he didnt move an inch. you can make so much money on that shit. like he makes all his money in this scene and pretty much kills it

then theres like pin wars btwn artists lol. some kid who also is real popular in the pin game was there when my homie was selling pins. he sat down next to my friend and tried putting his hand in my friends bag where he was putting all the money. so we watched him and was like dude get the fuck away from that bag

i dont do pins tho. just seems like a waste of money to me

some pins are like version 1 pins too and only like 100 made and they can get really high in price since its like the original version. V2 will be the same design with diff colors and like slightly diff. then V3 will be slightly diff too

wooks be like "oh damn thats the V1, id give you $100 but i got no money so like id trade you this wire wrap and this heady crystal for it" lol

but people will pay retarded prices for certain pins

Hahahahahaha, pins.  The dudes with hats fucking LOADED with pins almost always look shady as fuck.  You could recreate the design for someone else's in demand pin EASILY and sell them for buku bux and make bank if you are shady like that, and there is no way to know if that pin you dropped a bill on is actually from the "limited printing" of the authentic artist.  I regularly see pin makers angrily calling out reproduction sellers on facebook and proceed to make a big deal about it.  Who invented the pin game is a fucking marketing god.

I don't have any pins. I didn't realize there was a market for it but I understand the collectible nature of it.

I would be curious to see some collections

Once bassfreak told me about the murderous, cutthroat politics of the pin market and I researched it a bit.  Found that some idiot once paid like 1300$ for ten pins.  Some of them look cool, but that's crazy.  I bought one at a show once for like 15$ as a souvenir, keep it in a drawer.

whats it look like?

But yeh pins are basically worth what people are willing to pay so you see alot of dumb go for stupid money. But you gotta realize some are like rare and commemorative so theres bunch senimental value to some these that why auctions can go so high. Theres like one bisco pin that goes for like $150 actually theres bunch crazy rare pins that could go for redic money.

that hot air balloon disco pin is dope.  my buddy has a shirt with a similar design.  jigsaw earth, hot air balloon, house dog.  I think there are a few other references in his... spaga I think at least.

My hats got like 20 pins haha. I'm def not shady and I've only paid for like 3 or 4 of em. I personally love pins, most of my pins were kicked down to me by awesome heads. Not all pinheads are douschebags lol.
