Animals don't fear death, they simply fear what is harmful, automatically -- and not all the time.  (Of course, animals do not understand that they will die).  Hunter-gatherers had a completely, I mean completely different way of seeing and interacting with the world, and it is anthropological record that they (e.g., the Hadza) feared death virtually not at all compared with civilized man.  For me, that throws a monkey wrench into the notion that this is all part of the human condition.  So perhaps it is more of a psychological fact that a bare existential one.

I do quite agree that the biological mechanism of avoidance of harm/death, and the sexual side of the coin as well I would add, fuel virtually everything we see in human and animal societies.

I'm a little lost on that first sentence as you contradict yourself a little, I'm not convinced we are that separated from the animal kingdom and it seems apparent all animals seem to fear harm and death to varying degrees, more often associated with high levels of cognition but not limited to.
But still that sentence alone urges me back to my cautions about the phrase death anxiety, as a conscious fear of death would have almost nothing to do with it as the underlying force of behaviour it represents.
At least what Becker seems to have been meaning.

Oh I'm not appealing to consciousness as the deciding factor at all.  I apologize if I was unclear.  I essentially agree with everything you're saying, I'm only suggesting that the outward manifestations of DA can vary with different psychologies.  I go back to my point that civilized man is much more consumed with this subject than certain other peoples.  I attribute that to very deep-seated psychological differences.

Plagued by a nagging intellectual disquiet and a inevitable visceral horror from the dying process.
