which symptoms for not enough/too much humidity/oxygen in the substrate?

hi guys,
here are two different jars, one with holes one without, kept at 68°F. They are my first jars ever, so I don't know how to analyse the differences.
The one with holes has some cottony mycelium around the holes (unless it is cobweb mold ????) What would you say?
The other one has very strong looking rizomorphic mycelium, no air exchange except when I open it once every 2 days. The bottom of the jar look to have a strong RH (too strong??)
How do you recognise when hymidity and oxygen is not right?

looks like mold.
what kind of mushrooms are you trying to grow?
what tek are you following?

oh yeah sorry, it is cubensis. No tek, just what I have read and understood so far from Stamets.
The whole experiment is here
Should cobwed mold smell like something?

oh i see
I'm not sure. Cobweb is pretty easy to identify visually so I've never had to smell it. It also colonizes really fast.
I usually just lightly smell my spawn jars before spawning. If it smells like anything but fresh mushrooms, I know there's a problem.
Here's some good info about cobweb: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18642418

ok sweet, i'm reading that.
Any info on humidity/ air exchange adjustment? Does it look too wet for you (the second one?)

You have cobweb. It's all over the first one. Everywhere but the top which is mycelium.
The 2nd is branching/roping. I always see it when my substrate is too wet. You need some gas exchange too. You need around 10000-20000 ppm of co2 during colonization.
Personally I'd follow either a pf tek or a grain/bulk tek to the t. Those jars look like they're not going well.

Haha my first time I took a bucket of manure without pasteurizing it and squirted a whole syringe over it and put saran wrap over it. It was pretty much a huge epic fail with pretty much every mold in the book spread throughout my grow area haha. I then went over to bird seed and then mixed it into poo/straw/whatever and then had success follow a tek and it'll be ace

I said first pic and it's all over lol. Thin and wispy all over it. Look closely. 2nd pic is just ropey. I said I see that when it's too wet. But that's been my experience.

The entire left side and half the right is covered in very thin wispy grey shit idk how else to describe it to you but it's not like any cube mycelium I've seen I'm not saying it isn't mycelium. Just that it's definitely not anything I've ever seen in cubensis

left side on pic 1? On the straw itself or in the empty space all the way to the left? I still cant see it, on the far left side I guess it just looks gray because of the cup but I can't see any hairs...

what I have seen so far is that it appeared when i did the holes 4 days ago, and it hasn't been growing much faster than the ropey stuff. I have seen the fluffy stuff from the beginning on as it expanded from the cardboard (I mean I considered it was mycelium since it looked like some parts of what is in the first pic of the link in my signature, where you can see the fuzzy and ropey stuff), but to see it grow quicker after I made the hole raised questions about humidity/oxygen, and cobweb..
Could it be that it could come from the fact that this substrate is really loose compared to anything we can see on this forum? Could it explain prospecting ropey mycelium?
It has been one month since cardboard incoulation, and there was just the piece of cardboard you can see in the middle of the jar, and the temperature was only 68°F.
I mean the point was not to grow mushrooms at that time, it was to see what would happen, so I could have a ground for question here (sort of :-)
I'll tell you tomorrow anyway what's happening

dactylium is some of the most common OMC(online mushroom community) calls cobweb mold
cobweb disease is much different and quite rare that's what kizzle was talking about in his link. cobweb disease, not what OMC has decided to label cobweb mold, something completely different.
cobweb mold may be able to be treated with h2o2 but I wouldn't bother I would just fix the problem at the source.

this isn't cobweb disease, but this is what OMC calls cobweb mold. it can be all different species but it's anything that acts like that. its' not worth identifying further for most of us, we just want to get rid of it.

I believe it looks sickly. Sorry that's about all I can tell you. Normally healthy mycelium is opaque and yours is pretty wispy and translucent.

looks fine to me actually.
I see no cobweb type mold. that's more rhizomorphic than tomentose, when mycelium is traveling over unpacked straw like that it almost has to be rhizomorphic in morphology to colonize. tomentose or rhizomorphic make really no difference the mycelium will do whichever it pleases depending on the substrate. as long as a culture is capable of having rhizomorphic growth your fine, just like as long as a culture isn't sterile and makes mushrooms. cars have a 1st gear and a 2nd gear regardless of which gear you're in the car still has the same performance and may be in 2nd gear at some points and first at others. the only problem comes when you lose second gear.
it's growing funny on that straw because it's not packed enough which it's surprisingly is colonizing somehow and the moisture is off too but other than that I really only see cube mycelium in there. no point in toss yet.

I have to admit that's true.. But hey, i'll start agar soon..
By the way, I was wondering: is there any risk of breaking a petri dish if it is closed when the PC cools down?

maybe 5 if you count one round of 4 jars and the tub I made
petri dishes are not air tight so no, but unless you have a glass dish that's autoclave safe it shouldn't be in the PC at all.

and I figured out also it's doing what it's doing to bridge all the gaps in the substrate, so smart these thing

hay is for horses, straw is for mushrooms.
it looks on the dry side for straw but idk what that would do. grains on the dry side still work just fine. I thought my straw was on the wet side but it turned out fine. beats me, cubes are hardy survivors.
those dishes are probably flint glass, like all glass they'll take the heat but they're not tempered so they get weaker with time as they cool and heat up they temper and anneal themselves into more fragile crystalline structure eventually they'll fail and you'll find a cracked one when you take it out. they're also in general a lot more fragile. but it should work just fine for now,
