What substrates can be pasteurized with a hydrated lime bath?
    #21756628 - 06/03/15 09:15 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I have had good success pasteurizing chopped straw with a hydrated lime bath, but straw isn't always easy for me to come by.

Are there any other substrates that lend themselves to this method of pasteurization?

I don't have any info to offer you, but would you mind explaining the hydrated lime bath? I need to pasteurize a whole bale of straw and bringing a 55 gallon drum full of water up to 160 degrees is very energy/time intensive.

Search chemical pasteurization. But I believe it involves simply adding enough lime to swing the pH to something drastic such as 12

I would think that pretty much anything you can use for growing oysters on that you can get relatively clean to start with would be fine for Lime pasteurisation.
