Possible contam, fruiting predicament (pics)
    #21755504 - 06/02/15 11:21 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys could really use some advice!

This PE tub looked okay before it was put into fruiting. These are pics after about 8 days. Just one noticeable abort and finally today some small pinnings on the sides. Fearful it may have internally contaminated, but not sure if this is a mix of technical error and a mutated first flush of PE.

Any thoughts or advice of what should occur to get them healthy would be great.. Dunking the substrate was considered or possibly cold shocking? Anything would be awesome.

Or more fanning perhaps? .-. With the combination of something else...  Thinking if the FAE was f'd as well.

Last bump for this thread before I pass out. If any late-time mycologists are feeling generous, give me a shout (:

Thank you very much.

It's a tropical species, so cold shocking isn't necessary. Colonization looks great with no signs of contams.

It's my understanding that PE strains take longer to grow (but I've never played with that kind of cube myself), so my suggestion is to just be a little more patient.

You should only mist if the sub looks dry (ie: not glistening) and only fan when you mist to disperse the new moisture.

All in all, I can't really see anything wrong

Humm, thanks for the input Myconin! I typically expect to see more pin sets towards the center. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong in getting them orientated correctly. I've noticed the substrate itself has sucked in at least an 1 1/2 inches from the sides of the bin without any pronounced fruiting.

Perhaps, I'm thinking too much. Just worried there's an internal contamination that's preventing more widespread pinning. Also, the pins on the side of the edge with the white dusting on the caps.. Does that look normal? Chitwans and hawaiians didn't behave so peculiar lol.

They were also put into fruiting like 8 days of consolidating... appeared to colonize really fast with using reverse osmosis water for the entire process.

Your sub will pull away from the bin edges as it consolidates and consumes nutrients/moisture. This is normal, happens on all my bins. Although, 1 1/2" seems pretty far from the sides. Do you mean each side has shrunk that much, or is that the gap if you push the bulk sub to one side of the bin?

White dusting or flecks are normal as well, it's just excess mycelium from the formation of the pin. Happens in every one of my bins as well

Thanks again myco!! Pinning is starting to occur a little more now, but yeah it is 1 1/2" in on each side. Maybe closer to 1.25" in. What should I do if the pins remain short and stubby? Isn't that a result of bad FAE? (:

Short and stubby is ok if they're pins. They'll grow up :mushroom2:. Just be on the lookout for aborts. If your mushies have super fuzzy feet, that is a sign of poor FAE, if they look cracked or spliting, it's poor humidity. Follow my previous misting/fanning advice, and you should be just fine.

I've not heard of a sub shrinking that much, what are it's ingredients?

Could you maybe put up an updated pic please?

Sometimes PE just doesn't fruit well from MS. Casing and cloning will help you out a lot.

With stubborn cultures I have "dry shocked" them before. Do I recommend people to do it? No, not unless youre used to being able to judge your sub by looking at it.

That being said you do so by leaving the top off for a little while. This varies by ambient rh and amount of air flow in your room etc.

If its already pinning though just leave it alone and let it do its thing on its own time.
