Damn, some crazy stuff
-------------------- Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

And here is an even bigger, lower sax

Why would anyone even need a sub contra bass anything
That thing may be the most ridiculous instrument ever conceived of...

Yeah I was watching that show Boardwalk Empire and they showed one of those a few times, so I looked for vids of people playing them and that's what I found.
Another vid you might get a kick of, not an unconventional sax but an unconventional use for sax:
The banjo player is a guy I took a class with once.

I got to play the Baritone sax in highschool band. It was so much sax, wish I learned how to play the tenor though, it's in a different key as the alto and barry so the fingerings for the notes are all different.

Thanks so much for posting this, I play tenor sax and haven't seen anything bigger than a bari before. It's hard enough playing a bari if you're not used to it, kind of like going to a bigger didgeridoo, it takes much more air. I can't imagine even trying to play something that big. The slide ones look really fun.

Some nice bluegrass pickin for sure That banjo player looks kind of uncomfortable though
So are you saying sax is unconventional in bluegrass? Because I will admit it is but I know bands that use sax and flute in their bluegrass/ bluegrass fusion work.
I love bluegrass with sax, though it differently is pretty rare. What kind of class did you take with the banjo player?
I really want to learn sax but as a string player I know it will take a lot of effort, different finger styles would definitely be a pain too.
And I wouldn't want to be stuck on one sax.
You are welcome illustrain, I was hoping some people would appreciate it like I did. Cool to know the shroomery has some sax players!

It's Irish traditional music actually, though I think bluegrass does have some roots in Irish music so there are strong similarities. Tenor banjo (tuned in 5ths, same fingerings as fiddle/mando) is pretty common in Irish music but I don't think this is very well known outside that scene.
The class I took was a week-long thing on Irish banjo that was part of an annual Celtic music festival in my area.
Tenor guitar is kind of a bastard offshoot of the tenor (4-string) banjo that he plays on some of his albums. I have one as well. It's got the body of a guitar but 4 strings tuned as a tenor banjo would be.
Here's some random guy playing one:

Bluegrass definitely has a lot of irish roots. Some of my favorite "bluegrass" songs are really just more modern takes on old school irish fiddle tunes.
Yeah I can't say I have heard of tenor banjo but I am not super into banjo besides some bluegrass That sounded nice though, as did the tenor guitar.
I have always wanted a baritone guitar for some reason. I think its becouse they are deep, man I like the festive sound of that tenor one though.
Sounds like a cool class also sounds like a pretty chill local music fest.

Yeah I have only seen baritone guitars in youtube vids but I love lower pitched versions of instruments. The tenor guitar I have I ended up converting to take strings an octave lower than normal. The lowest string is something like a 130 I think. Looks like a real hack job and unfortunately the intonation is a bit off, but I love the low sound.

Same here unfortunately.
Bass has been on my mind a lot lately becouse of that, so low and smooth.
Customizing instruments is the best, even if it messes up intonation and stuff a bit
A lower Tenor guitar, that must sound pretty interesting!
