Hidden Fruits
    #21754471 - 06/02/15 07:36 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So my buddy John and I were looking at one of his cakes that had a couple nice fruits going when we noticed something.  We saw a new pinhead coming from the very bottom on the dry vermiculite, which was the top before he birthed it.  He has this cake sitting in a clear Tupperware type dish.  I held it up and looked through the bottom and noticed four little babies growing on the bottom.  These fruits are growing from the dry vermiculite layer, and were only visible by holding the tray up.  Since they are between the cake and the plastic, he is worried that they might die.  We brainstormed about maybe making a stand with a spike and skewering the cake on it so that the fruits could grow from any direction.  There's a fruit growing on the top, so we can't just flip the cake over.

What do you guys think?  Will the fruits be ok if we do nothing?

Just leave it be and try not to handle it unless it tips over. Some mushrooms will grow invitro, so really pinning from the bottom should not be an issue if you're worried about damaging the fruit.

they pin from the bottom on cakes often because dialing in fruiting conditions can be a little bit troublesome for the noob grower. that's the only place suitable for pin formation on the cake you should re-think how you're fruiting it. they're smarter at mushroom growing than you are so if they're not pinning on the top or where you want them to then you need to try to make them happy.

Thanks for the tips guys.  I think I'll tell John to just leave them be, but does anyone have an opinion on the idea of sticking it on a dowel?

They also like to pin from the bottom cause that's where gravity drags the water.  Don't worry they know how to grow themselves. They do just fine on the bottom.

So even though they are in between the cake and the plastic they will find their way out huh?
