soldering iron advice

I need to switch out the jack on my headphones since it went bad. I need a soldering iron to do that. What sort of wattage should I look at? Any tips on models, etc.? I have never used a soldering iron in my life. I just want my headphones to be badass again.

Sadly, if you try solder a joint into your headphones, you will likely get interference or low output (or both).
You can try it, but dont expect great sound results
I would recommend getting a 30 watt. And be careful of the large tube in the middle of the iron, Ive burnt myself on that dumb thing SO many times

Get some stuff to practice on first. Otherwise you'll fuck up and damage what you're trying to fix to a point it can't be repaired. I've dabbled with soldering. One of the countless hobbies I picked up and soon gave up on. If you're not really going to get into it, no need to go all fancy or anything. Although keep in mind you get what you pay for. My first one was really cheap and ended up fucking up after a couple hours worth the use.

How does one practice? Just get some metal pieces and solder wires to them?

Decommission old electronics, take the resistors and shit off the circuit board and then work on soldering them back in until you can make joints that look like it came that way. If you wanna go a step further and test functionality, take a few resistors off something that works, replace them with new ones (they're cheap at radio shack) and put it back together and see if it works.
If you wanna spend 10 or 20 dollars for practice, you can buy LEDs, switches and vanilla circuit boards (don't think that's what they're called but I can't remember) and resistors and what not from Radio Shack and follow simple online plans to build your own circuits from scratch.

Go to a hobby store (Like Radioshack) and buy a roll of thin wire (18-gauge is around headphone size), cut two pieces, strip the wire them with a knife or wire stripper, then twist the bare ends together, take your preheated iron and flux solder and "meet" them onto the wire and try to make a smooth solder "weld".
Keep practicing till u get it.

honestly don't even worry about the watts or brand or anything.
what you want, is the SMALLEST tip you can find, and id suggest getting it online because if you go to a store chances are you'll end up with a big fat tip and will bump into all kinds of things you don't want it to bump.
then from there, you'll want some of that bee's wax shit, i forget what its called but it makes the solder flow. your doing a repair job so you might not need it, but you'd be surprized how often it helps. Alot of times ill get my gun blazing hot but it still won't melt nothing, then i dip it in that shit and poof everything flows instantly.
also get a tip cleaner, and pretin your tip, you want your tip to look like that guy from terminator 2.
speaking of which they should make a condom that looks like that

I agree with the posters that said to practice. I've done it, and it can be tricky. I've seen people that were good right off the bat, but not many. You do get what you pay for when it comes to soldering irons. Flux and isopropyl alcohol work wonders in concerns to cleaning/prepping everything.

I've never noticed this and I can't think of a good reason why this should be the case, apart from bad soldering skills. A properly soldered weld will work fine for an application as this. The main issue with soldering headphone cables is their small size and the end result may not look pretty, but it'll work just fine if it's done well.

yah im guessing he didn't use 'shielded' wires maybe? that would cause interference im guessing, im guessing, i think

its fun. I taught myself how to desolder on house arrest. and numerous other useful things like lock picking and knot tying. I can tie an awesome noose.
