Here's some of my personal suggestions that fit within the theme of this forum:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Steins;Gate-a classic, probably anyone who has an interest in anime have heard of it,but probably haven't about the next recomendation that is set within the same universe...

Chaos;Head,Chaos;Child-This what you get if the project MKUltra was hit with the Japanising beam ,I suggest reading the visual novels instead of watching an anime

Serial Experiments Lain-What can I say...I plan to rewatch this series on 100ug to wrap my mind around this...

Tokyo Ghoul-I love how psychotic most of the characters are in this show, and the MC is one of my favorite characters of all time,I suggest reading the manga to get a full depth
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Visual novels:

Subahibi (Wondeful Everyday-Down the rabbit hole)-This is a visual novel that I think every psychonaut has to experience. It delves deep into some dark themes and some scenes may be pretty distubing but in the end,it's well worth the journey.I suggest skipping the first chapter and then reading after finishing all the others.Reading 'It's my own Invention chapter' for the first time was one hell of the trip...

Rewrite-Getting along with a nature and stuff...

Serial Experiments Lain is such a mind fuck  So weird and abstract, so many relevant concepts though. Their early take on "the net" is pretty interesting, they also sort of predicted Nootropics with their "brain drugs" or whatever.

Have re watched it multiple times and still am not positive exactly what happens :tongue2: It's the kind of show that raises more questions then it answers :strokebeard:

Episode 16 of Lupin III Part 5 came out today, was a really amazing end to an arc about civil war/ a coup attempt by the CIA in a foreign country.

This is easily one of the most underrated anime that has come out in awhile, even if you don't like subbed shows usually check it out as it will probably be awhile before it is dubbed:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/lupin-the-3rd-part-5

If you haven't watched any Lupin each part is standalone, so you don't need to watch parts 1-4 before part 5. Parts 1-3 all came out in the 70's/80's but are worth watching if you like classic shows. Part 2 especially is great, Myazaki directed 5-10 episodes of the 150~ that aired, though only the first 80~ got dubbed.

Seriously check it out:

I thought Kill La Kill was alright but pretty weird, but yeah most new stuff lacks a lot of the soul of some classic anime. The older art styles tend to be a lot more beautiful and artistic as well IMO. I don't mind some CGI/modern art but hand drawn stuff is like bringing a painting to life.

A lot of the really hyped up new shows are very cliche, and it seems like anime as a whole has shifted to target younger audiences way more. 90% of shows are about schoolkids for example, which isn't entirely new but it seems way more common.

Just re watches Ghost In The shell, the original movie. That is a serious work of art, so many great concepts. Does a great job blending sci fi stuff with more philosophical musings about what constitutes life.

This newest Lupin series has already brought up a lot of great concepts as well, as well as various serious topics like human trafficking, the drug trade, CIA/FBI sponsored coups, and the power of the internet/modern technology.

So I finally gave in and bought the attack on titan movie and it got here yesterday. Thing is, it was season 1. I made sure I had bought the movie.

I'm returning the damn thing and I found another company that has a 100% rating. They are also 20.00 cheaper.

I haven't been watching a lot of anime series this season because I have been using most of my free time playing VN's and reading manga.

The couple anime series that I'm watching this season are:

Steins;Gate 0 – This anime is great so far and it's probably going to be my favorite anime of this year.

Tokyo Ghoul:re – I don't know if I'm going to continue watching this series because it's horrible. It's easily one of worst adaptation I've ever seen. It's like Studio Pierrot isn't ever trying anymore. I was looking forward to this adaptation when I heard that they were going to pretend that root a never happened, but I was met with disappointment when I finally watched it. They're rushing though the story missing important plot points and characterization. I don't how people that haven't read the manga can understand what's going on. Not only are they rushing though it, but it also has horrible art/animation during the fight scenes... Yeah it's best to ignore this anime altogether and just read the manga.
How many people here play VN's?

Here's some VN's that I highly recommend

Umineko – Not only is it my favorite VN, it's also one the best works of fiction I've ever read. The story resonated deeply with me and it stuck with long after I finish playing it. It like it was made  specifically for me. I could go on and on about why it's so amazing, but I think you should start playing it right now!!! Oh, the anime adaptation of it doesn't exist.... and the manga adaptation of  it is better than the anime, but I still think it's too abridged. Yeah, the best way to experience this masterpiece is by playing the VN. Just make sure you have a lot free time because it took me around 130 hours to read though all of it.

Steins Gate – Even if you watched the anime series, playing the VN is still worth it. I think the VN does somethings better than the anime and you'll also get to see the other endings. You should also play Steins;Gate 0. It's not as great as the first one, but it's still a great VN.

Muv luv trilogy – Muv luv – Alternative is one of the best VN's ever made, but you have you play though extra(first game) first in order to play it, but it's well worth it for its epic Science Fiction story.

Rewrite – Between Clannad, Little Busters and Rewrite, I found Rewrite to be the best VN Key ever made. I think the best way to describe Rewrite is it's a cross between Clannad and Fate Stay Night.

Fate Stay Night – First VN I played and it's still one of my favoites. If you watched Unlimited Blade Works and hated Shirou, try playing this game because his internal dialogue helps you understand the way he thinks.

G senjou no maou – It's the Death note of VN's.

Ever 17 – It's one of those mind-fuck stories.

Subahibi – I agree with everything oceanman said about this VN. Yeah, there a lot disturbing scenes in this VN that are very hard to read through, but it's worth playing.

Saya no Uta – If you never played a VN before, I suggest you start with this game because it's only 6 hours long and it will give you an idea if you'll enjoy playing other longer VN's. Also, If you like Lovecraftian stories you'll like this game.

The anime is probably one of the most faithful anime adaptation ever made. So, it really doesn't matter which one you choose.

After you watch or read Monster, make sure to read other manga from Urasawa Naoki. 20th Century Boys, Pluto and Billy Bat are all amazing:thumbup:

Speaking of manga, any horror fans? Been meaning to read a collection by Junji Ito who is somewhat famous for several very bizarre short horror stories. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junji_Ito

He writes/draws some really strange stuff, lots of very creepy surreal art. Almost lovecraftian in ways:

Gyo was adapted into an anime but still haven't checked it out, the manga was equally disturbing and intriguing :strokebeard:

This couldn't be more true lol The anime is complete trash, it seriously has to be confusing as fuck for anyone who hasn't read the manga. I really don't know how anyone could possibly consider it good just because of how much is left out of it, it barely makes any fucking sense because of how they went about it.

It is, that movie was the first film Myazaki directed as well. He also directed at least 5-10 episodes from Lupin Part 2 (though they were never dubbed I believe)

The Castle Of Cagliostro is the most "family friendly" lupin installment by far, the original manga was much more dark/mature. Myazaki did his own take on it and made it more "wholesome", still a great movie though.

But personally I much prefer the other more serious/mature lupin series/movies. They deal with some interesting concepts, The Women Called Fujiko series deals with psychedelic mind control and secret human experiments, as well as drug cults.

There are dozens of Lupin movies/specials that came out over the years, some are pretty meh but a lot of them are great if you like classic anime (though many actually came out in the 90's)

The Mystery Of Mamo is my favorite, from 1978:

It has some great sci fi concepts and a very interesting villain.

Lupin the Third - The Secret of Mamo Trailer

For some reason that trailer has some different voice actors then the movie :strokebeard: the version I am used to has much better voice acting especially for being from the late 70's. Guess it may have been dubbed more then once.

Or really? That's funny how I spotted that, probably haven't seen that movie in 10+ years.
Awesome! I'll look into them thanks.

It's hard for me to find good anime to watch,
It seems all my friend have really bad taste and alway tell me to watch bad anime like attack on titan or beserk.

Trying to get back into anime.

I just miss A Vision of Escaflowne and Armitage.

It's weird as Lupin has been around since the 60's and is fairly popular around the globe yet still very underrated to most anime fans :strokebeard:

Part of the problem is there are so many different Lupin series it can be confusing, and even though they are all standalone it seems common for people to think "do I need to watch parts 1-4 before part 5".

Anyways definitely worth checking out, very classic series. The jazzy/funky soundtracks have been consistently great for decades as well:

Lupin III - Yuji Ohno live w orchestra

Quote:

I just miss A Vision of Escaflowne and Armitage.

Those both sound familiar, a lot of those older movies/series are the best.

Also Berserk is not even close to comparable with attack on titan, the anime adaptions are mediocre compared to the manga but the manga is a serious work of art. Though it might be too dark for some people, at least at times. Overall it's a very beautiful and inspiring story but it certainly takes you through a huge range of emotions. And the dark parts get very very dark :uhoh: but inversely the happy parts are very uplifting, no other work of fiction has moved me to tears so much while reading it

Here are some colored panels from the manga to highlight the incredible art:

Berserk has been coming out for decades at this point (since the 80's) so the story has evolved a lot over time as well, it starts out more of a dark medieval war story but eventually shifts more to high fantasy stuff that isn't quite as dark. So some people prefer the earlier parts and others prefer the newer stuff, I love it all but am very excited to see where the story heads as it's still slowly coming out. Really really hope it finishes before the artist/write gets too old... All the anime/movies just adapt parts of the story, and they all skip bits as well :shakefist:

Ya, I read Berserk YEARS ago back when I was an angsty teenager that lived at Hot Topic.
I read everything that was out up until that point back then, but again, forever ago.
I remember really liking it, especially the art, the spooky art!
But I got bored waiting so haven't thought about it until a few months ago when my friend tried to get me to watch the anime.

I gave it a chance but just had a bit of a been there done that type of a mood towards it.
I told my friend as much then he proceeded to say it was better than A Song of Ice and Fire which is total bullshit.
So now I've got a stupid vandetta against it.

there's nothing wrong with the anime
anyone who knows anything about animation knows a 3d model is much better for action sequences and that it speeds up development considerably
there are still lots of high quality images too

like for real they spend 1million dollars on a 30min Simpsons episode and you guys want them to animate a 40 year old anime that got canceled for breasts lol

It's had on and off hiatuses for awhile anyways, there's a lot worth catching up on depending on where you stopped. But it's been taking a break after a pretty big cliff hanger :shakefist:

People compare it to GOT a lot but what's better is subjective in the end. I like it more for the lovecraftian parts and mystical elements which are done very well.

If you mean the 2016/17 berserk series I partially agree, there are definitely things wrong with it but most can be overlooked IMO and the good moments make up for the bad ones by far.

Berserk may be old but it is popular and has a large fan base, it's one of the best selling mangas of all time I believe. So it deserves a higher budget full adaption like Hunter x Hunter got, which hopefully it will get one day when it's finished or closer to finished at least.

Is anyone here learning Japanese?

I just found this site that you can use to learn Japanese with anime.

https://animelon.com/

I've been checking the site out and I think I'm going to try using it for awhile and see what happens.

This will be my plan for using the site.

Step 1: Pick an anime:

I picked Steins Gate because it's one of my favorite anime series.

Step 2: Start going through each line of dialogue looking up the vocabulary and grammar that I don't know.

For Vocabulary https://jisho.org/

For Grammar http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/

I'm going to create an anki deck with everything that I need to know for the episode.

I'm also going to listen to loops of each sentence over and over again. So, I can practice listening to Japanese.

Step 3: When I know all words and how to read every Kanji in the episode, I'm going to watch the episode with Japanese subtitles.

Step 4  Watch the episode with no subtitles.

Step 5: Watch the next episode and start over.

This couldn't be more true lol The anime is complete trash, it seriously has to be confusing as fuck for anyone who hasn't read the manga. I really don't know how anyone could possibly consider it good just because of how much is left out of it, it barely makes any fucking sense because of how they went about it.

I've been thinking, who is the target audience for the anime series?

The people that are fans the manga won't like the series because it's a horrible adaptation of the manga that takes everything great about the manga and throws it out the window.

And

The people that only watch the anime will dislike because they will not know what the fuck is going on.

Well, hopefully it will get the adaptation it deserves sometime in the future. Maybe the should give it Madhouse because they did a good job with Parasyte adaptation.
