Confused about different coco coir/husk/fibers, the right kind
    #21753853 - 06/02/15 05:32 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Okay I know this has been asked alot and I apologize for the post but the answers are very mixed.
Some say husk is bad, or fiber is good, or that coco coir and coconut husk are the same, and others say they are different and husk is a contaminated mess.
Others say that they've used husk with success and yet others have said husk is not useable at all.

I cannot find compressed brick coco coir at any Petsmart,Petco, or alternative pet shops. All I can find is Eco-Earth, or this Exo-Terra shit that I purchased above. I can find it online, but ordering coco coir when I can get everything else locally seems out of the way and stupid.

Can someone once and for all, clearly answer these because the answers in all the posts I searched weren't clear at all and many people were saying conflicting things.

Is coco coir and loose coconut husk fibers the same thing?

If they are different, is the kind I pictured above, the wrong kind?

Has anyone had experience using this or Eco-Earth loose substrate instead of the compressed bricks?

Please guys I've found this very confusing as the ingredients for both the loose husk fibers and the compressed coco seem to be identical, with the only difference being one is compressed and one is already shredded.

Coco coir is compressed coconut fiber, from what i've heard it's better to use a coco coir brick, the general consensus is you DONT want coconut husk.. you want coco coir. I ran into the same problem, tried looking at petsmart etc.. so i ordered a brick online. Come the next week and i was in petsmart again and they had coco coir bricks, they may just be out and need to re stock, check back in a week if you truly dont want to order it online... that being said i havent heard of anyone using what you have nor do i have experience with it.

Sorry this isn't as clear of an answer as you'd like...

I have heard of people using Eco-Earth and getting the same results as coir.. which leads me to THINK it is the same thing.

The stuff that is in the bad in your picture looks like coco-coir to me.  It looks just like it's supposed to.

Maybe someone else can give you exact answers, but I'd say the stuff in your picture looks good to me.

Yes that's coir. But its wayyyyy cheaper to get the coir bricks and expand them yourself.

Coco Coir and Coco Husk are the same thing. Its just all in processing. Some is finer and some is more coarse.

With that said, not all coir is created the same. I have found Eco-Earth brand to be superior to other off brands. I get more volume and a better texture than the other brands Ive tried. Some of the off brands produce a product that bulks up poorly or has too fine of a finished product, resulting in what resembles mud.

Another  thing to consider with the off brands is to check and see if they have been pre treated with trichoderma, while most heat processes will kill those spores, if you are using a variation of the bucket tek, you will have a bunch of funkiness on your hands.

Check your local gardening and hydroponic stores for other options available to you.

Also, that bag you have should work fine. However, you will get a better deal if you buy the brick.

Does anyone know what a coir brick weighs??

In the OP's case, how will he know how much to use?

I buy coir in GIANT blocks and have this problem because I have to cut off chunks..

Thanks guys especially wildernessjunkie.

I am going to use this stuff, but for future bulk batches I will just order the brick online, as the bricks obviously expand and give me way more coco than these bags.

I've been to Petsmart and Petco dozens of times, as I usually need to buy crickets anyway, and they NEVER have the brick. I've asked employees and managers and they either have no idea what I'm talking about or they're guaranteed that they won't ever have any in stock. All they sell is the loose coconut husk fibers substrate, such as Eco-Earth and the Exo-Terra brand. I also live in a city where many pet stores are close nearby and the same problem exists, they only have this pre-shredded crap.

Also, I will be pasteurizing without the bucket tek, I plan to just hydrate the substrate (verm/coco) and put it in jars on the stove in the pc with the lid not sealed and get the internal temp of the jars between 140-160 for an hour. Not sure about the bucket tek but I do plan to dunk the rye jars.
