SFDs seem expensive at first but they're infinitely reusable. The cost becomes negligible after a few runs.

Damn, eats, do you just use a dime or something? When I used to cut up my filters I'd use a nickel and I'd get 7 circles max.

I just recently started using 1/2"-1" hole stuffed as tightly as possible with polyfil. Depending on what my inoculate was I witness different speeds of growths. A slice of agar took about 3 weeks my tigerdrops colonized exceptionally fast, under two weeks.

I currently use 1/4" holes stuffed with polyfil.... works great btw.
I have some plastic lids and some SFD's I am going to put together one of these days...just haven't gotten around too it. And the ones I use now work so well I haven't been in a rush to switch over...lol.

damn... those sound like pretty big holes. I can see 1/2" but 1" seems it would cause the grains to dry out.

I don't see how you could stuff poly tight enough in a 1" hole...maybe I underestimate poly

For my quart jars I use two 1/8" holes on the sides for GE and a 1/4" hole in the center covered top and bottom with RTV silicone.

I do agar to grain. I use a 1 inch whole in the middle of the lid with a filter disc over it. Cheap. Simple. Easy. Works for me. I get 5 circles out of each wide mouth filter disc. I also run a thin layer of silicone on the inside of the lid to keep it from rusting

Step Two: Make your lids Using a 3/4" or 1" drill bit or hole saw, carefully drill a hole in the lid of each quart jar.
Stuff the lid with polyfill VERY TIGHTLY. You should stuff it as tight as possible, no exceptions.
To test for good polyfill density, stick your needle through it. You should feel some resistance as you press it through. More resistance is better in all cases.
