Anybody here managed to germinate Banisteriopsis Caapi? I am looking to source some seeds but have been warned to source these around November as they do not remain viable for long. Is there truth to this?

Yeah, although a good GA-3 (gibberelic acid) soak can break dormancy. I tried it on some year old seeds and got 1/5 germination. You need to have warm temps and high humidity for this species, I just killed my plant by repotting, didn't like the decreased humidity and wilted immediately. Even removing the humidity dome has to be done by degrees, any slight changes will shock them. If you live somewhere like Florida they should be pretty easy to manage and can be put outside somewhere sheltered. I've given up on them for now, they need a lot of room in a hothouse or tropical outdoors where you can train them up on a trellis or something so they can branch out. They get big and wild very fast once they get going and I didn't quite have the accommodations.

It's easier to just buy plants but.. I just recently got 3 Black Caapi seeds to sprout and are doing well now It took nearly a month probably longer for them to germinate and that was without ga-3 so 3 outta like 15-20 seeds...

I have tried Caapi, and black..Both,.. to no avail.. I am thinking of getting ahold of some g-3 and giving it a try again. Maybe order some seed again and give it a second try.. I have a 3 strikes policy with tropicals.. lol.. I try 2 times and if they fail, the 3rd time I try and grow.. I buy a live plant or cutting.. lol

Would be nice to live in Hawaii where it seems to grow like a weed

I had a look at cuttings which is the general recommendation I have recieved so far. Unfortunately I live outside the USA. Shipping if even possible is out of my price range, seems to be around $150 to ship a tiny cutting..

I've made a little survey on older posts on this subject, and the guys who really got it right seemed to use a soil mix with peat in a well-vented and high-humidity dome (one of them even used an aquarium pump, i think, in order to maintain a good airflow which prevents mold growing).
My 2 cents: Soak the seeds in a covered bowl and in a warm place (maybe on the top of your fridge) for a day.
Since you want a decently drained soil, I would recommend making a mix of peat/coco and cacti soil (25% peat/coco) or just cacti soil. And it could be good if you kill any gnat eggs that could lay in the soil (put the soil in a Pyrex, soak with water until you have a nearly-mud texture, roll a piece of wet cloth over it to prevent your kitchen from smelling like a graveyard, and nuke in a microwave for 15-20 minutes, full power, stopping every 7 minutes to check moisture content). Let it cool after you finished. Remember, you want the soil to be moist, but not soaking wet. Put some 2 or 3 cm of perlite in the base of the pot, then put the soil over it (this allows better drainage). Make sure there are a few holes on the bottom of the pot.
Then, you cover the pot with a plastic bag with 2 or 3 holes (i don't know if these seedlings tolerate full sun, in any case leave them near a window but in shade). Or you can create a dome with a transparent plastic box - first, put the lid upside down, then put a terrarium heat mat over the lid (this depends on your room temperature) and the pot over the mat, and then cover it with the box upside down (in this case you don't need the plastic bag and the air volume is bigger than just the little volume you have inside a plastic bag). You can also use the dome to put the bowl with the soaked seeds inside of it, before you sow them. Using a SGFC to germinate the seeds could also be a good option.
And as for the soil moisture, I'll give you a tip - bury a wood skewer in your pot, make sure it goes deep to the bottom, and leave it in the pot. When you want to check the soil moisture, you take the skewer out - if it's dry, it's time to give your soil some water.
Make sure you remove the dome and fan the pot (with a magazine or so) a minute or two everyday, to keep the dome with fresh air. When the seeds germinate, keep them in the dome, and when the seedlings reach a good size, you could do this to familiarize them with your room's RH: on the first week, you put them out side the dome for 30 min, everyday, and keep increasing it by 30 min every week until you see the leaves don't shrink when they are outside of the dome. If you used the plastic bag, it's easier: poke 1 or 2 holes every day until you have no more bag to tell the story
And then when the vine is established, keep in mind what I'm about to tell you, because this is a rule that works with most plants: the less you "touch" it the less you fuck it
All best and nice gardening
