Hah. Yeah settlers don't exactly have fightin skills. Though they are especially bad at fighting the wanderer. you should have tested by spawning some various wasteland baddies like raiders or super mutants or synths since you easily can using the console. They can you get a better feel for how they would fair without you doing most of the killing. Its a good way to test your non-npc defense as well like your wall placement and turret and trap placement.
also, I cant see your images because I'm at work and our firewall blocks files.shroomery. You'd have to upload them to a place like imgur or some other image hosting site for me to seeze jor sleeze.
For a while I was going to setup red rocket but it was driving me crazy trying to get shit to line up with the garage door so I could incorporate it into a housing build. So I gave up until later when I get around to installing some settlement specific mods like place in red and the settlements expanded stuff. I've made the castle my main base at this point. It was a lot simplier to easily fix the walls without needing any funky tricks or mods and enough room inside it to house all 24 people + some shops and what not until I get around to actually building out the center. I did move my generators from inside the castle to a small buildout rightg around the center tower, and eventually will use the large radio tower as my power point to send power out to the walls from high up so it looks snazzy.
There are a lot of cool settlement places I'm finding. Some are a lot harder then other (I'm looking at you, hangsmans alley) but others have lots of space and cool buildings to work with or off of like the sewer plant one, warwick homested. I was able to place some floor pieces right above the entrance to the sewer plant they converted into their home and then build a multistory room to the room and line everything up super nice. One of these days I'll unlazy myself and take some screenshots. It's just nice when the world placed buildings actually line up with the sizes we have to work with on our settlement building. Normally stuff is just way off so you cant have your multistory stuf line up with some in game house or buildings multistory stuff, or the width and length of something is way different then the floor pieces size we use.
Warwick is also cool because it has big open water containers you can stick industrial water purifiers in for uber water collection, and there is LOTS of space to work with that is mostly flat and level. Mostly.

The survival mods look cool but I also think they are a little TOOOO harsh. I hope more variations or versions of it come out over time because it would be nice to increase the severity of rad storms as they dont mean shit, even without any protection or rad-x, and some level locking of certain perks is kinda nice too since the way they changed the system allows you to make an uber character before you even leave the vault, well, mostly.
Am I the only one that notices that you cant get any protection from the rad storms? The tooltip that comes up on the loading screen or whatever says to seek shelter, but it does NOT matter if I'm inside a nice building or not. The lightning hits, I take the full rad spike it seems. And there doesn't seem to be any other rad effect except the lightning strikes that I ever see.

Started building up my castle settlement today. Just getting the buildings and shit in place, haven't started decorating or anything yet.
Main (and only) entrance. Lined with spotlights and machine guns, missile turrets and heavy laser turrets and one guard tower at the top

Entranceway is full of teslas traps and flamethrowers

Overhead view

All the breaches in the walls have been filled by foundations, making there only one way in and out

My power generator tower in the back of the settlement

Middle tower, where all the lounge/rooms/etc etc will be. This will probably end up being like 10-15 floors (Want it to extend above the radio tower and have a huge area up top)

I would upload them but I'm just too tired to deal with it right now.
Yeah I don't like shit getting in my way when I'm trying to build. I'm waiting for an effective mod to get rid of everything but grass/dirt. Though a good bit of the basic pieces can be extended/expanded to any custom length with the modpos command. I'm now routinely doing it. Obviously it only works with pieces that are more or less uniform. Some of the wood walls for instance have a very random pattern that just becomes an eyesore when you try to place them in each other even when it's only a mild/moderate amount. From what I read, that is probably not likely to happen until GECK is released.
I've started learning to work around the random shit we can't get rid of. For instance, my fairly huge communal home is built on top of the truck stop and the truck stop building serves as my work shop and storage area for gear/weapons/aid etc. I also have plans to build a "skyscraper" apartment building at another settlement (probably start working on it after I get done with the truck stop. Truck stop is my main base of operations so when I learned to do things better, I decided to tackle that place first) and the foundation of it will be built around and over a pre-existing building.
If you haven't found it yet, find spectacle. It's like 95% dirt. The landscape isn't the best unless you're going to use some kind of mod or console command, it's nothing but hills. But, it's pretty big and there's probably enough land there to farm food for all your settlements. Also plenty of access to water and again, wouldn't be at all difficult to build up enough of a water supply to supply all your settlements.
Right now, I'm having a lot of fun just building shit up. I spent months for hours at a time in Minecraft doing basically exactly this but without the level of customization FO offers, along with a real purpose FOR doing it.

"Seek shelter" meaning a building with a load door. Rad storm strikes will still hit no matter location if the player is on the world map. Loading into a new building does not automatically end the storm outside, but they are short-lived enough that a brief indoor exploration will usually take up the duration.

Figured out what I'm going to do with the third floor. Gonna be my armory and other such "utility room". First thing I did was build a cell for the naughty settlers or raiders to hold until I feed them to Strong.

Anyone seen this happen or know why it did? Was doing a quest and went to go back to my truck stop and my population was at 15 when I fast traveled, as soon as I got there, got told another settlement was under attack, fast traveled there, destroyed everything in about 20 seconds, went to fast travel back to truck stop and it's up to 20 again.. what the hell?

My settlement numbers are often wildly fucked up on the map. Abernathy farm regularly reads as having 40 people for me when it really has like 20 when I get there.
Since we're posting settlement pics I'll throw my ridiculous Starlite Stairscape into the mix: (still a work in progress)

Mostly just a labyrinthine shanty town at the moment, but its a pretty good one.

PSA: If you spawn 50 BoS in power armor and fire a nuke into the middle of them, they don't all die. When they don't, you're dead before you can really do anything else.
Also, firing a nuke into a horde of 100 ghouls is a glorious site.

Well it wasn't my original plan, I tried to make two armies fight each other but found it less than impressive and slow. I spawned a fat man and destroyed the ghouls, then turned my sights towards the BoS. I was dead before I even removed the launcher from my shoulder to reload.

That's why you turn on god mode before trying to nuke 50 BoS
I did the same thing but I spawned 50 BoS to fight 120 deathclaws in addition to my settlement defenses.. when I was still aligned with BoS...
The AI is kind of dumb when you spawn masses of them even if you turn combat ai off and back on, kinda have to start shooting shit for them to start responding sometimes . Pretty epic battle though. Watching 50 BoS going nuts with gatling lasers on Deathclaws is fun

Have you built any walls with the mods that give you the covenant/BoS stuff? I built a wall to surround my place and only today spawned any enemies because I wanted to see how well defended it was. I spawned them outside the wall for a realistic idea but even with my people and turrets shooting them, and me shooting them, they just stood there like there was some kind of invisibility cloak over my settlement. The second I stepped outside the gate they charged me, but if I stepped back in they stopped. Spawned inside the wall, they did exactly what you'd expect them to do. They were high level ghouls as well, so my entire settlement got wiped out .

You built a thriving center of humanity in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and than you tore it down around you by coming at the head of a honest to god zombie invasion.

Well I didn't save it they're still alive, they were just slaughtered in an alternate reality. People should fear me if I ever become omnipotent. I'd probably make Q look like a choir boy. I can't wait til GECKs is out and some more stable mods can be made, namely to increase settlement border sizes and populations (to something more like 50-60+ people, there are mods for both but comments on them make me wary of using them). Then I'm going to have some real fun. In the middle of the night I'm going to release like 30 legendary charred ghouls, a dozen deathclaws, some supermutants, and 50 raiders (basically just everything that will attack settlers but also each other) in the center of the town and document the chaos.
