 Did you get Grognak's Axe while you were there? It's so OP. I just got 2 insanely OP weapons while doing mission to find Nick Valentine. First is the Furious Power Fist that I assume is always found on Swan in Boston Commons (he was a bitch to kill too, took me 4 tries to beat him) that does more damage the more you hit someone with it  and another was an irradiated chinese officer sword that does 50 radiation damage.

Unfortunately, the axe is not as useful to me as the machete.
The sword sounds like it could be fun; have a .45 pistol with the same effect.

Enjoy the layout and accessibility of different points in the city.
Nice little neighbourhoods, to towering views over the city.

that is quite strange that a fallout fan wouldn't know about that pip-boy light. How did you loot dark areas in 3?

If you change the colour of the Pipboy screen in the display menu, it also changes the colour of the flashlight.

I don't ever remember being in any place that was pitch black. There was always some light, I do remember going into dark areas and just randomly grid searching the place to see if a prompt would pop up. The most relevant example I can think of is like the subway stations/tracks. I know I never used a light in there even though at points it was almost impossible to see.

When I think 'dark area in Fallout 3' the place that immediately springs to mind is the Dunwich Building. Parts of that place unnerved the shit out of me.

I think I stayed the hell away from that place . I know there was some place I went in and walked around for about a minute and just said fuck this and refused to ever go back. I just wiki'd it and it's a likely candidate as it doesn't really have anything in it I would've cared enough to suffer through for it anyways.

I dunno, I don't go around murdering innocents you damn psychopath.

 I really haven't got to the point yet where I save, create all kinds of untold havoc and reload. Mostly because I've yet to make it to any major city where there are plenty of people to slaughter.

It was worth exploring for the creepy radiation obelisk the ghouls are worshipping in the basement. There's also a quest that makes you go there in Point Lookout to burn the necronomicon (thats not what it's actually called...but I can't remember what the fucking book was called in that quest). Also the melee bobblehead iirc?

I never melee in Fallout except at the points before you get a gun. I'm not an achievement chaser either so getting them all for the achievement (if there is one) also doesn't matter to me. I've never played any of the DLC on 3. I only bought the game itself because it was on sale and it looked like it could be a fun new online FPS for me to play. At the time, even though I enjoyed the game, it really didn't seem worth buying the DLC as well so I just never did. Those were the days when the only thing I ever pirated was music. Maybe after I finish 4 I'll go back and pirate the DLC just so I can say I've played it. Do you automatically get leveled up for the DLC? I've played 3 enough I really don't want to go back through it again just to play the DLC.

EDIT: Actually never mind, it just occurred to me I could console level up.

Which is very pertinent to me. I know the plot in pretty good detail, and it really did have a pretty good plot. Watching several videos of the gameplay and such, I even kind of have a grasp on how the story was actually told.

I would question how you wouldn't classify it as a stealth game though. You don't really fight from everything I've seen. You rely on not getting killed in between solving the puzzles to advance. I doubt it would have scared me much.. But my dislike of the other stealth based survival horror games has basically lead to an irreversible hatred of stealth games. Comparing Soma to Amnesia really isn't very fair, it would be like comparing Fallout to CoD or something (not talking quality) so if someone thinks I was, I wasn't.

I also wasn't really saying Amnesia was a great game or had an amazing story, it was just one example of why I hate the stealth-survival genre. That game really did scare the piss out of me and I'm not even ashamed to admit it.

I never vocalized it, but that was pretty much me. :canthelpbutlaugh: I was constantly freaking the fuck out. There is just something that gets me way too immersed in it.. I stop thinking like a gamer and start thinking like someone who is actually experiencing it. As a gamer normally I'd just let it happen because "well I'm fucked anyways". In that game, I actually go into fight or flight mode and start panicking trying to figure out what to do. I actively engage in survival instincts. I am such a pussy

I just dont think it falls into the same category as most stealth style games.  Yes, you do use stealth and yes you cannot hurt or attack the monsters, you only can run and hide, but since there are multiple monsters and they all have different AI and different sense, some you can walk right up to, some you can be standing right next to, but cant move because of the sound.  Some you cannot LOOK at.. etc.  Its a really unique take on it.  Classic stealth games usually are just 'avoid patrols, dont let them hear or see you' and thats mostly it. Thats all I meant when I said that about it not being a classic stealth style game.

anyone who's played fallout 4, how badly is it ported? aka did they design the UI for consoles or did they spend more than 5 minutes thinking about PC users?

UI can be painful to traverse at times, especially with storage at a large scale (everything in my workshop seems to just group together and sort by name; have to physically store weapons apart from items if I want ease of access.)

Pip-boy is a little bit of a headache to click around in, but not hugely detrimental.

Inventory shows a picture of armor coverage, and if a piece of gear unequips/replaces particular areas by swapping, those areas flash on the Pip boy so you know what is being impacted.

I concur with the pipboy interface being somewhat of a pain.  I'm playing with my xbox controller (on PC of course, duuh) and after having some random issues with some of the pipboy screens I switched to mouse and keyboard just to make sure.  The interface issues I had on the mouse were different then the issues on the controller, but all in all the same amount of clunkyness.  Im back to playing on my controller and I think some things are just muscle memory with how my brain is hardwired from most other games menu usage, that doesnt work the same in fallout.

For example, looting.  When you just move the cursor over a body it automatically pops up the contents, be it a box or a body.  you dont have to press anything but I instinctivly press "b" after I loot something because I keep thinking I'm in a menu I clicked to open, and therefore it pops my pipboy up (B on controller brings up your pipboy for those who dont use a controller)

same with talking to npcs.  They can start talkijng to me before I even walk up to them, then I move the cursor over them to press A to talk but since they started a dialogue already it goes straight to one of the chat menu's and A ends up being some option I didnt want to do, so I accidentally piss them off or whatever.

Now that I'm more used to it I dont have as many issues, but at first some of that shit really drove me nuts.  Inside the pipboy I've really learned to use the sorting options in inventory, especially when dealing with junk in the inventory menu.  On controller you click Right stick down and it cycles through whatever that menu allows, sorting by weight, or damage/armor, etc.

Now that you mention it, those two (other) things have bugged me as well, I just didn't really think of them when talking about flaws. I do like the looting better this way, but it requires time to get used to. I've got to break a decade long habit of opening up a menu on a body or storage space. The random items sitting out in the open are still the same way as always.

The talking thing is kind of annoying though and doubt I'm going to get used to it or like it. Unless it's the mindless gibbering only there for a more immersible experience, shut your damn mouth  I'll talk to you when I feel like it.

As for the Soma thing, I guess that's fair enough. I've grown to hate games that have "enemies" you can't fight against though. I don't like feeling helpless because IME that has pretty much always translated to shitting my pants and running away like a little girl. That style of gaming has just permanently tarnished for me.

god dammit man!  This was bothering me since release hour~!  I watched a streamer playing on monday morning and he somehow had a 'flashlight' in the start of the game but once I started playing it I could not for the life of me figure out how he had done it, or if it was some special gun or what.  I even went through the control mappings for controller and keyboard/mouse.  THANK YOU SIR. THAAAANNKKYOUUUUUU

I'm going to be pissed if the keyboard key is blocked when using a controller.  I noticed while using my controller that you CANNOT use the mouse and most keyboard commands.  Its a one or the other kinda deal.  Hopefully either holding tab will work, or holding B (the pip boy button on controller) works for the light.

Yeah the more I play the more used to it I become and less it fucks me up, the looting more so then the NPC talking, that still seems to get me fairly often.  I do like it now that I'm expecting it and used to it, the looting that is.  It does speed things up quite a bit and does seem like a proper logical step.  Logical enough that I'm actually wondering how games have not been doing this already for a long time..  It seems like any RPG or loot based game would be far more efficient with this style of looting, but I dont think I've ever seen it until FO4.

The only other thing I kinda struggle with is building stuff.  Sometimes getting a door to lock in place or a fucking fence to line up is a nightmare.  Like sometimes you can easily place a gate and attach some junk walls to it and block say, the bridge in sanctuary, other times it seems like I have to tear down every single piece of everything and spend an hour trying to line up my walls just to not have holes big enough for raiders to walk through.  Dont get me wrong though, I *LOVE* the fact that settlement building "RUST STYLE" is in the game, it just feels clunky to place shit more often then I'd like.  Especially since sometimes it doesnt even make sense why it wont let you place something.  Like trying to put a bookshelf against a wall in a house.  Normally I can place it properly right up against the wall no problem, other times I cant get it to go green until its a foot or more out from the wall, which of course looks like complete and utter ass, even in a falling apart wasteland house.

Edit:  oh! and someone asked a few times how to set up the tradiing or local leader stuff.  You have to assign someone to it.  I dont have the local leader perk but I did read about it in an article in passing and they mentioned you have to assign a person to do it so thats probably how you start it.

I haven't gotten too far into building yet. I just did the first quest in sanctuary where I have to build the shit for them. I took the next hour or so to scrap everything in town that could be so I was starting with a "clean slate". I haven't had too much issue with placement yet. It did seem kind of clunky but found some ways to make it more refined. You can manipulate both the object directly while standing still and and you can do it with slight movement like side stepping or whatever for the right angle. Once I started getting that down, it got pretty easy to do, but I haven't built anything truly complex yet so I may still find trouble when I do. So far I've just sealed up all the walls and ceiling in my old house and threw 5 beds in it for the people, put down some basic defense things, a water pump and purification plant, generator and some food crops. Sealing up all the holes was where I learned how to refine it better since it was proving difficult to do just standing there.

I just wish there was an easier to way to scrap large areas quickly. Running through a whole neighborhood doing it piece by piece is very time consuming. I got a lot of goddamn screws out of it though, so to me it was worth it. I've maxed out all my guns the best I'm going to be able to until I get more perks.

Also, for those wondering, you don't have to loot the neighborhood first. Anything in the items you scrap go to the workshop storage, including stuff in safes and what not. So if you wanna save some time, when you find a new settlement area, just run through scrapping everything and then you can pick up all the loot in the town's workshop storage.
