So far my only real criticism of the game is similar to Fallout 3 -- Hate feeling so railroaded in the main storyline.
Want to play a lesbian --> start the game out married with a child
Decide that my character is still a lesbian, and was placed as a caregiver for the child of a soldier who lost his wife --> quest dialogue won't advance unless I sob to people about how much I miss my husband and child from before the war.
It wouldn't be so bad, but when people ask my character about her motivations and "it doesn't matter" just loops me back around until the only way to advance is "my husband, my baby. " it gets to me.
Damnit, Bethesda. I want to be able to play a life-long lesbian. I don't want every character I make to have the same back-story and motivations. Y U take steps backwards from New Vegas. You even took back my Cherchez La Femme for your voiced character nonsense.
Would not even mind the voiced protagonist so much if the story wasn't a railroad.
Give me a background as just a random vault dweller or courier any day.
In all other regards it has been fantastic though.

Pretend you're a life long lesbian who is too afraid of being judged, so even though you didn't love your husband, you give into societal norms and put on a game face and act like you really cared about him. Then go find some Ghoul and get your groove on.

I approve of this approach, thank you. The constant lying about my husband can be the justification for my Charisma stat increases.
Oh lord, now I'm already planning out another character -- that one will be sexually attracted to only robots, and stays in the marriage just for Mr. Handy. There better be a new Fisto the Sexbot somewhere in Boston.

I'd also settle for a ghoul cowboy prostitute as second best, but sex robots would be preferable.

There's lots of little issues with the game, mainly UI & just general port issues.
My biggest hate is how every fucking weapon just appears out of thin air & vanishes its really fucking annoying how I cant walk around the wasteland with my gun on my belt or my baseball bat on my back.
To me that's a massive oversight, it's like they just expected people to be like "ITS A GAME SO ITS OK FOR GUNS TO VANISH & APPEAR AGAIN"
They half-ass this release just expecting people to eat it up because its Bethesda & Fallout, It needs a lot of patching/mods for it to be a GREAT game in my eyes. This is a good game, but like SweetLeafSamadhi so many steps back from F:NV & they have taken away a lot of things that made Fallout what it is today (Karma, Skills, Random Crits & so on).
Not sure if other people have noticed this but Melee seems clunky, when Im sprinting & go to attack sometimes it just ignores me clicking & my guy keeps sprinting into the enemy. It's almost like when I am in melee the game doesn't respond to my actions as often, seems 1/3 clicks wont do anything, I find myself having to firmly click & hold for a second to make sure it registers to the game I WANT TO ATTACK.
Having only 4 options to choose from when I am talking to people gives less feel of freedom during conversations, the 4 options mainly being something like yes, no, sarcastic or more info. Sarcastic being the most annoying because I really have no idea what the fuck my guy is gonna say. Is he gonna be sarcastic in a dickish way or be friendly & joke about it? I have no idea.
Also I haven't done much of it but the town building seems really clunky & annoying to use. So I am just avoiding that for now I had zero fun with it when starting.
A lot of reviews are already coming out going more in-depth on the things I mentioned & more.
Its obvious Bethesda really wanted to make the release date rather then releasing 100% finished & polished game.
Like I said this is still a good game, but its only that. Nothing amazing yet but I'm still having fun wasting hours of my life on it so far.

So far the only thing that really bugs me is just the navigation of the Pipboy. I want to be able to fully navigate it without using the mouse, and unless I'm missing something, you can't. You can only switch between the menus of any given tab with the arrow keys. Intuitively, the way to navigate would be to press the up and down keys to exit/enter the given tab. Scroll the through 5 tabs, hit the down key on the one you need to navigate through and then use left and right to scroll through the subtabs.
The gun thing might bother me, except I don't play in 3rd person ever. First person it's pretty much the exact same as all other first person games that use guns, I'm so used to it, it's just inconsequential. No more "annoying" than not being able to see my feet when I look down.

So that could be why, reaching the largest market possible. Pretty much everyone has a DVD drive, not all have a blu-ray drive. Maybe offering both could work, but that would add to production costs.
I see no point in ever getting a blu-ray. The vast majority of all media I get, is done solely through the internet. I have never found a need for larger space when writing to a disc, I very rarely do it. When I do, it is 100% of the time some CD I made to play in my car while driving. I've had my computer for a couple of years now (I built it myself) and I have used the DVD drive maybe a dozen times. The only reason I even have that is because they are cheap as fuck these days and at some point I may need to create a boot disk. In times past when I didn't have the network drivers on an install or anything along those lines, I would write a disk on another computer. These days, I do that with a thumb drive.
Optical drives of any kind are old, crappy technology. I don't put them in any of my computers and just keep an external one for legacy stuff.

Running the Classical station almost non-stop, except when picking up distress signals. The ambient music is nice too, but the Classical station keeps me in a better mood.
Stopped in at Hubris Comics, figuring it would give me a few comic perks.
Found a Grognak Costume that gives me +2 Strength and raises my Melee attack damage -- can be layered with everything but chest pieces.

So my current build is unload a pistol in VATS to build up a crit, swap to my machete, fire off the crit which gives me the refill on my AP, swap back to a pistol and build crit up again. It's kind of brutal -- and here I was expecting to sneak everywhere and just stick to sniping.
When it's not sickly green from a rad storm, the wasteland has some nice colour to it at times.

For those who have gotten into the building (buildings) stuff stage, do you have a way to quickly scrap a large area? Some houses are called ruined and you can scrap them all at once, but for the others and all the trash laying around, it's taking me awhile to clear it all. There's gotta be an easier way to do it.

Did you get Grognak's Axe while you were there? It's so OP. I just got 2 insanely OP weapons while doing mission to find Nick Valentine. First is the Furious Power Fist that I assume is always found on Swan in Boston Commons (he was a bitch to kill too, took me 4 tries to beat him) that does more damage the more you hit someone with it and another was an irradiated chinese officer sword that does 50 radiation damage.

pretty sure the big sized ruined houses and wreckage isnt scrap-able.
still trying to figure out how to assign trade routes between the settlements so you can share resources, with the level one local leader perk. Just hit level 11 cant wait to get shops up at level 14.

If they're still a reasonably standing structure, they're not. If they're just a pile of rubble they are. I wasn't asking how to clear out all the houses though, just clear large areas of all scrapable materials. Like every single thing in some house all at once or something. Doing this shit piece by piece is time consuming. I'm nearly done with Sanctuary though.. Pretty much scrapped everything possible including trees and shit, got a couple of houses left.

I just found out something totally by accident.. Did the pipboy always function as a flashlight? I never remember that ever.. I held down tab (instead of V to get back into craft mode) and the area lit up in a green glow. I zoomed out to third person and sure enough my pipboy screen is glowing bright green.

Yup. That was a feature in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, can't recall if it was in Fallout 2. I've gotten shot at a few too many times because I forgot I had the light on while I was sneaking.

That's weird, I honestly don't recall ever reading about that through my multiple play throughs of both 3 and NV.
