Bethesda has put out their rough update plans for after release:
Quote:
Fallout 4 – Launch and Beyond
After many long years, Fallout 4 is entering its final months of development. We've put so much into it for so long; we can’t believe it’s almost done. The game will soon be out of our hands and into yours. There’s so much there that we haven’t talked about or spoiled, because we want you to discover it, to make it your own.
It's during this stage of development that we start thinking about how we'll support Fallout 4 after launch. We wanted to give you a taste of what we plan on doing:
Regular Updates
We'll be doing regular free updates to the game, and like Skyrim, these will come with not just fixes, but new features. For Skyrim we added things like mounted combat, legendary mode, kill cams, visual enhancements and more. We’ll work with all of you to figure out what new things you’d love to see added to Fallout 4, whether they are small tweaks or new features.
Mods & Creation Kit
The most important thing in our games is the freedom you have to create your own experience, and modding is a big part of that. Like all our previous games, we’ve made sure to keep Fallout 4 open and moddable at every step in development. Early next year we’ll release for free the new Creation Kit for the PC. This is the same tool we use in the studio. You'll be able to create your own mods and share them with others. We’re especially excited these same mods will then be coming to Xbox One, and then PlayStation 4.
Downloadable Content
We've always done a lot of DLC for our games. We love making them and you always ask us for more. To reward our most loyal fans, this time we’ll be offering a Season Pass that will get you all of the Fallout 4 DLC we ever do for just $30. Since we’re still hard at work on the game, we don’t know what the actual DLC will be yet, but it will start coming early next year. Based on what we did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim, we know that it will be worth at least $40, and if we do more, you'll get it all with the Season Pass.
Thanks again to all of you! The support and excitement you’ve given Fallout 4 has blown us away. It’s energized us even more to do everything we can in these final months to make this our best game yet. We absolutely can't wait for you to play it, and share your adventures with us and each other.
Not sure how I feel about Season Pass being out before DLC, but suppose they want to use whatever funds they can generate from sales on creation of more content.
Just 2 more months now.

Every time I manage to forget about Fallout and the months I have to wait, this thread gets bumped.
Hey did you know you have to wait 4 months? Hey did you know you have to wait 3 1/2 months? Hey did you know you have to wait 3 months and a week? Hey did you know you have to wait 3 months and 3 days?
--------------------
With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

I confess that I love them. Behind the Scenes with Dogmeat motion capturing the dog
Kind of an interesting short watch.
Bethesda has also been posting footage that was recorded (but do not think released) at E3, and talked a bit more about unkillable companions.
Video is mostly information that has come out already, but liked the bit more detailed insight of being able to use stimpacks to get a companion back on their feet if they are incapacitated.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. part 3: Endurance
With the emphasis on eating in this episode, wondering if food items and corpses will remain simply sources of HP, or if Bethesda decided to draw on further efforts at immersion by making a sort of realistic needs system carrying through the broader game.
Perhaps just implying that Hardcore Mode will be an available play option.
Hope that Bethesda is putting their minds to work in making traversing the wasteland feel even less hospitable.

I cant wait to mod the fuck out of this game
I think i got to like 50 mods on fallout 3. 100 on skyrim.
I basically modded the games until there were too many conflicts for them to run anymore

i ruined a hundred+ hour morrwind file doing this. ive gotten really paranoid about it since then and try to stick with simple mods and tons of extra save files
even when im playing old PS/2 games and shit, i make an extra save file like every 10 hours in case i miss something awesome and cant go back to get it

My Skyrim is sitting at a little over 300 mods at the moment.
It got to the point that the game was crashing almost every 5-10 minutes, then I upgraded my video card and it's been fine since.

May consider doing a Let's Play or at least a mod review show when Fallout's Creation Kit drops.
In the meanwhile, figuring out what kinds of builds I will be running first -- thinking a stealthy sniper will be my first, then maybe my second playthrough will be a full zero kill character. Game is still over a month away and I'm working on figuring out more than one character already.

54k is a lot, I don't quit make as many but I do make metric fucktons of them. I basically do it every 5-10 minutes. Having to go back 4+ hours of gameplay because you missed something 20 minutes ago, fucking sucks. The saves aren't all kept though. Once I have a huge list (basically a couple days of playing) I start overwriting the bottom ones and work my way up.

this. overwrite saves after a while, simple as that. For me having 54k saves would make my game lag like fuck
not to mention: good luck digging through that many saves if you ever want to dig up an old character

This is how I handle stuff like Dragon Age Inquisition, where there is an overall limit of 250 save files max.
On Skyrim, simply go in to the game folder and periodically batch delete saves from the folder every few days.
My big thing is that I got into the habit of doing it back when my game was crashing constantly; simply didn't like having to redo things multiple times due to a crash. Save before and after quest dialogue, before and after selling to an NPC, before and after loading doors, before and after looting corpses post-combat...really has become an intrusive mess, but that is kind of OCD in a nutshell. Now that my game is stable again, have not been able to break the habit. Dx
