Tent Greenhouse

In two months I'll be a daddy. With this responsibility comes the need to move my cacti off of my south facing covered porch. The girlfriend has no issue with where I had them, but I thought it prudent not to let my child get hurt by/hurt my other babies.
I started looking at greenhouse schematics and pictures, and how-to's. Nothing was really ideal for what I wanted or needed without the cost inflating.
Suddenly one night on the couch, I had an idea. Why not use my old ten-person tent that is slightly broken and out of commission?
The more I thought about it, the better the idea sounded. This tent has plenty of space, a separate screened in porch area, and most of the top is mesh. It will filter the light ideally.
At this moment, I have jerry-rigged the top triangular support piece out of the spool from a tapegun. (That top triangle piece is what was missing/broken, although my girlfriend assured me it is in the garage. I will look soon)
If I can find the triangle piece, it will greatly stabilize the structure more than the tapegun spool. Then I can pull up my stakes, reposition it exactly where I want it, and spread it fully before staking it back down.
Now I went out and bought some PVC pipe 3/4" x 10'. I plan to build an outer frame to connect to the tent for added stability.
My stakes are 18" long and a half inch thick, with holes drilled through for easy tying.
I bought a roll of 6 mil plastic sheeting 10' x 100'. I could not spring for the uv resistant stuff this time, but I heard good things about this particular plastic still holding up multiple seasons.
As soon as I get it staked down in its final location, I will begin posting pics. I am attempting to build most of it today. Thanks for watching!
MY GIRL WAS RIGHT, THE TRIANGLE APEX PIECE OF THE TENT WAS ON THE FLOOR OF THE GARAGE. I am in business.

Here are the first pics. This is the tent setup, not staked in completely. I laid the pvc pipe around the edge. It will be anchored on the north and west sides to the fence posts at ground level. On the house side, East side facing the house, I have not decided exactly how To anchor it. I do not want it putting any holes in the walls, and the overhang is too high. I am keeping this below the fence line. The south side where the pictures are taken from, will be anchored to the ground with the the large 18 inch stakes I bought. The south side is also the side that receives most of the wind and rain during our hurricane season. We are actually in the hurricane season now, but Ive been blessed with a few days of sunshine to get this done.

Im not sure of the exact size, but mine is closer to 300 square feet. I am going to utilize the full sun area In front of the tent too.

I got the back, and side pieces up, and about half the roof. I still need to secure it better, and trim excess flaps of plastic.

After putting it all together..my original idea of the tent greenhouse, kind of disappeared inside of building an actual greenhouse, that now has an inconvenient tent inside. I need to get another sheet of plastic to finish the last part of the roof, it will overhang the first sheet by about 6 inches. All the rain should run off the side towards the fence. I will add poles for support once the tent is removed, so that no water can pool on top and ultimately break it down.

I was wondering how the tent inside the larger greenhouse would work, seemed a bit weird to me.
Looks good though
Also congrats on fatherhood too man!

hehe, well the original plan, I was basically just going to wrap the tent in plastic. After I started, I realized that a square base with the angled roof would be better...so now its just a greenhouse.
Today I added a crossbeam to the roof, and a central pole. I still need to add 2 more support poles, and the rest of the roof. It is coming together very nicely.
Another note, I expected the plastic to be transparent, not opaque. So I thought the mesh roof of the tent would provide the ideal shade for certain plants.

Well it looks like it turned out pretty nice. Wrapping a tent in plastic is an interesting idea though.
I have been eying this thing on ebay for 80$, could work for making a huge tentgreenhouse...

It is a 20 foot tent teepee If only it was all mesh.
I will be looking forward to some photos of when yours is finished, sounds like it will be nice and sturdy.

The problem with the teepee shape is you lose lots of upwards growth space on the angles of the tent. Mine has the same problem at the curved end. I plan to use that side for my small and sickly plants.
My highest roof point is probably just over 7 feet, and right where it curves down is maybe 4 feet.
I had a vision in my mind, but as I began to build and certain aspects did not work, I had to change the plan. Also, I am working with pinched nerves and herniated discs. So its tough work for me. Ill be posting more pics tomorrow, when its light out.

Yeah that is a good point, 4- 7 feet is pretty good, 7 is generally the tallest I see smaller to medium size greenhouses.
It definitely can be hard to stick with the original vision with projects, so many things can change. Sorry to hear about the nerves and discs too man.

You are telling me. Today we had some fierce winds, and I could hear the pvc knocking against the house a little. I went out to take a look, and it is holding up VERY well.
I cannot wait to get it finished, and be able to post the final project. I am about to go work on it now.

UPDATE: I have begun gathering materials for a greenhouse rebuild. I have about 20 percent of the wood needed to build a real greenhouse. Going cheap cost me in the long run. Live and learn. Expect updates as I build. Thanks for watching.
