Cron's KSSS. A year later. --> Porn UPDATE 6/5
#21751774 - 06/02/15 08:35 AM (8 years, 7 months ago) |

Shroomery!
A little over a year ago Cron sent me his KSSS print. From there I've been spending the last year with nothing but contam issues.
I've dumped a total of 40 (give or take 2) tubs since last May. Barely got any harvests. If you've ever had a run in with a hidden contam then you know...
So I finally cleaned up my culture.

Once I was sure it was clean *again I put it on to WBS then to a coir tray.
(These pictures are from the 2nd flush)

So, now that I kjnew the master was clean, I ran through to tubs.
Got one pinning today. These are 1 brick of coir/ 2qts Black Kow

So as this tub matures, I'll be updating this.

Spawning 4 more

Also, some of the best tubs I had over the winter trying to perfect the clone

^^ All those tubs were contaminated, IDK if you can tell by the pictures. I haven't had a harvest from a good tub for a year.
So, finger's crossed!
Positive vibes?
UPDATE 6/5
This is the first tub that went into fruiting.
We'll be fine.
**NOTE. my tub dried out on tip cuz of my bitch ass AC unit. so I got a shit ton of side pins before I realized what was happening and added wax paper to the top of my substrate.
So, that's why this pinset is so uneven. My other tubs pinset is coming in eveb.
Full tub

Hey spacechild
I had one tub go bad on me this time. But I can directly tie it to improper pasturization. I was trying the eatu oven tek...
Note on that.
I made my sub too wet to compensate for the oven. Came out way too wet. Also I was trying to figure out how to get my oven dialed in to do the pasteurization.
Still in the dirty dirty til next month.
But I'm pretty sure my contam issues are over. For now at least

Those are some fat ksss dicks you got on that 2nd flush wbs/coir tray. even if those other tubs were contaminated, that 2nd pic of the tub of mushrooms have really nice white stipes with really vibrant orange caps. I love the way those look at that stage of growth which is when I would probably pick them because when they reach maturity them caps really become a dull brown.

Ready to spawn 4 more tubs

Got these 3

And then 2 and a bag

I have no idea. A green mold of some kind. But it could have been anything from the culture, to not wearing a fresh laundered shirt.
But mostly it was the culture.

How much time do you spend on mixing and leveling the substrate? Is it important or not important to focus on a little more finer detail?

I had a really big ego when I jumped back in this and I was rewarded with all the contamination in the world
so now I would say definitely afford attention to detail
Remeber the world is made up of atoms...one of the smallest particles of matter
so I would say yeah, attentiom to small details is key
I do flatten out my the substrate I don't take a whole lot of time doing it but I make sure its right

I wasn't focused on WHICH contam it was. Nor did I care to elaborate much on it.
The issue I had was a green mold of some sort. Trichoderma, penicillin, whatever.
My line of thought was WHY it was there.
Also, dealt with a few tubs that had vert, but that's because I was out of town and the FAE wasn't right.

referring to the contamination issues, check my post about overcoming entire room contamination!
I found a mold killing spray that worked wounder!!! I knew for a fact that my spawn was clean, but ran into contams for a solid year, as I too was smug about my process.. But I had a tear in my flowhood that cause the initial trich outbreak, even though I fixed my flowhood, that lead to me having 100% contams in every tub after spawning to bulk.
The mold killing spray I found, allows my to spray and soak my tubs, then wash well, then spawn to bulk with 100% success now

I used bleach with my issue, didn't solve the problem and waisted a good 25 more bricks of coir. The mold spray i'm talking about works wonders when nothing else will. I know from experience ;-)

here I'll break down everything that I did
I first started taking the culture back to more transfers, but still didn't get the fact that I needed a two-dimensional plane of myc
also my spawsspawn ratio is low I figured out so now I'm using 6 full qts
also I stepped up my sterilization time for my wild bird seed I now do 120 minutes
I bleach bomb my room. I washed every single surface with bleach I pulled out every single piece of cloth and sterilized in my washer and then I shampoo my carpets
also I started adding black cow manure to bulk substrate for beneficial microbes
I do a proper pasteurization tech I've done in the oven like eat you alive does and I've also done Franks proper pasteurization in jars
I think one of the big issues I was having with the contaminant being in multiple cultures... was my lab jacket sat across in the room from where the fan was blowing these contaminated tubs... and I didn't wash that jacket for like 6 months. it was about this time that I did the bleach bomb in my room
I did a control master after sterilization of a quart jar. Let sit on shelf for 3 weeks. No contam
I took sterilized grains to agar, just to make sure they were actually sterilized
I did a control of just plain coir no spawn (which kinda started growing something)
I sent copies of my culture to other mycologists to see if they were having the same issues
also now when I spawn, I don't open my pasteurized sub up to open air without spraying Lysol.
the jacket I use for still air box work, I wash that immediately before I do any work
also I did control work in still air box .. opening the agar dishes up and sterilizing my scalpel, putting on agar without any spores or anything ...just to see if what would happen... and all that was clean too
like I said it could have been one of them of the million reasons
also I think that there this is the reason why there is a learning curve with mushrooms. ..
They are sentient beings and I think that they want to see if you're really bout that life...
if you're really going to keep trying to make it work

Also, a note on bleach. This was an issue too.
I was making up my bleach bottles and letting them sit until I needed them again. But little did I know, that bleach will break down after 24 hours. It's why hospitals and such mix up their bleach when they use and dump when they are done.

sounds like your spawn is clean then? But you get issues after pasturizing... I'd honestly suggest to try damion's 50/50 technique with coir. Get a brick and 3ish qts of verm in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket (add some gypsum), pour 1 gallon of boiling water into the bucket over the brick and vem and cover with the lid tightly overnight. Then mix it all into your mono.
I've only properly pasturized bulk substrate once with some really good aged horse poo... Worked well and got monster fruits, but it was a lot more work, and I see more constant 100% results with damion's 50/50 tech

*---->>> EDIT* Sorry for the double post. meant to edit the above post.
this is the first tub that went into fruiting.
We'll be fine.
**NOTE. my tub dried out on top cuz of my bitch ass AC unit. so I got a shit ton of side pins before I realized what was happening and added wax paper to the top of my substrate.
So, that's why this pinset is so uneven. My other tubs pinset is coming in even.
Full tub
