2nd Hand Pressure Cooker
    #21750527 - 06/01/15 09:23 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Someone is selling a 30 qt All American on Kijiji for $160 Canadian. When I go to look at it do I pretty much just check the seal surface for damage and all the bolt hardware for cracks and such? I have never used one so I have no idea what can go wrong with them and ruin your day.

Thanks

Look to see if it is misused, yes. The metal-on-metal seal is the most important part then most everything else is cosmetic, unless parts are missing or broken. Gauge weight, pressure gauge, 6 plastic wing nuts with attached fixed bolts. If there is no shipping charge that is a great deal. I got my 21 for the same w/o shipping. If you take care of them they will last a lifetime if not more. Make sure there isn't any dents/chips/dings/burrs where it seals. Use a little petro jelly on the seal when you use it.

I've done so much with mine. Cooking beans is the awesome because of the time. I've also made dog food by PC'ing a bunch of frozen chicken carcasses with leftover veggie ends and of course water, then strained the stock for us and the leftover stuff gets PC'ed again in jars. Good nutrition, plus its natural. Dog gets the bone meal that they need while there is no worry about the myth of splintered chicken bones, you can crush them between your fingers.

No luck on that particular one but I ended up getting a 15.5qt on EBay from someone a Canadian seller so the shipping was not too bad. The whole thing was $110CAD.

It came with a valve rather than the weight. It says model 915 so it was added later and is not the fancy sterilizer model. I am getting mixed messages from old posts if this is a good thing or not.

Am I correct in stating that the valve will keep me from blowing up the kitchen but I need to find just the right setting on the stove to keep the pressure at 15psi? And since I have no idea how old this thing is is it worth getting a new replacement spring and blowout valve?

Honestly I bought an $80 one with no gauge and only two click points from a Korean grocer and it has not let me down on sterilization.

I prefer the sterilization valve myself. It is a lot quieter/more stealthy than the weight IME. I don't think it was a retrofit--all of the older model versions of that model use the toggle valve instead of the weight.

It's imperative to replace safety plug if has any signs of dry rot/damage. Probably be worth replacing anyway. I believe the manual states it should be placed once every year or two under normal conditions anyway.

I don't think you necessarily need a new spring. Might be worth ordering a new one with your plug though to save on future shipping costs.
