Oyster in buckets colonization venting or not?

I'm growing blue oysters and just made three 3.5 gal buckets of pasteurized 2:1 sawdust and cardboard and have them resting in undrilled 5 gal buckets to maintain moisture. I plan to colonize inside my house where temps are warm and steady. Should i drill some small vent holes in the 5 gal bucket to aid with FAE for colonization? I was thinking two high and two low 1/2 holes with polyfill. Any input would be great!

They're definitely gonna need air exchange and should be just fine colonizing without being inside the extra bucket.
If your worried about airborne contaminants entering through the holes you've already drilled you could try stuffing them with polyfil, then removing it at fruiting time.

Im worried about the buckets drying out in my dry house. Im also trying to stop any water from dripping onto my floor.

If your getting much water leaking out, you stuffed em to wet. Maybe just put down a towel or set them in a low tray.
I don't think you have to worry about them drying out - those holes don't look overly big and there's not that many of them.
Seems like adding an extra bucket would cut off most of the air exchange even if you drilled holes in the outer buckets.

I actually have all three of em draining like in the picture, there dripping as we speak. So you think they're safe at 40%RH at 74-76F? I guess i can always mist the holes when they look dry.

Those holes are fine. They won't lose that much moisture.
I would caution against growing oysters in your house. Its possible to developes some nast allergies to the spores. And if you don't catch them in time youlk have a hell of a mess on your hands.
I've had better luck with smaller holes in my buckets. I still use the ones I already have, but any new ones I make will have 1/4" holes and more of them.

Thanks for the tips! I only plan to incubate and not fruit in my house. The fruiting chamber is in the garage that gets vented through the garage door daily.
Thanks for the pointer on the hole size, sucks i already drilled most of em at 1/2", I'll experiment and try 1/4" on a few.

A couple before and after pics. Regarding hole size.

They sure do bud out from those 1/4 holes!

wildernessjunkie, What kind of substrate are you using and what kind of yield do you get per bucket over how many flushes? Thanks!

Those were wood chips with a few handfuls of gypsum boiled in to them.
I'm not sure about the yield. I never weighed them. I get at least 3 flushes but usually 5.

Grain spawn. WBS from a filter bag. About 1 4 qts. Could have gone lower, but I had a lot on hand.

You don't want FAE during colonisation. Just gas exchange. I would use the outer bucket without holes drilled in it but put some kind of spacer between the two buckets to allow for some air to pas between them. I wrap mine in plastic for colonisation

I ended up going with putting the pails in identically drilled pails, there is a 1-2mm air gap between the pails allowing for some airflow. This keeps my 3 year olds curious fingers from prodding the buckets and keeps flies off the substrate.
