How do singers/artists survive?

Hello. Nowadays I go to youtube for all my music needs. I would look up the name of the song, or the artist/singer and then listen to the music while watching the video. I don't ever go buy the actual album/CDs.
I feel kind of bad doing this. I mean, if everybody did what I do, then these singers/artists would not be able to sell their music at all nor make money off it, then they would starve, or at the very least, would not make any more music, because it was not profitable enough.
What do you think? Do you go to youtube to listen to all songs? How do you feel about this practice?

I've spent countless thousands traveling and seeing shows. If a musician wants to make it today, they will tour and I will see them if they are good.

They still make money off you through the advertisements that run before their YouTube videos. Then they get paid from celebrity endorsements, concerts, merchandise, radio and TV appearances, etc.

Yah I can't remember the last time I bought a CD was. Something else you need to take into account is that not everyone is up to technology like some of us. I know a friend who can't even put music onto his own iphone. He relies on just buying the itunes CD's digitally and that's how he gets all his music. I laugh at it because he's dropping 12$ while you can just click and download almost anywhere.
- Other places are also heavily still reliant on CD's and shit. Poor areas for example. - They have sponsors and make millions through them - They have youtube/spotify/whatever ads that pay them dividends - Then they still sell a good amount of music usually via CD
I feel like liking an artist now is basically like buying their album. You may not physically purchase a CD from them but by promoting them to others, playing their music, and following their social media networks you are still paying them.

Well as of less than 60 years ago, musicians didnt make money. This whole "super star" fad didnt really exist until recently. Money shouldnt be a person's reason to do what they love. Any musician who has never struggled and played for free isnt a musician. These recent gimmicky pop millionaire "musicians" are just ploys from record companies/producers to make money. If the lack of money is all it takes to make these people stop...I say good riddance.

Just paid for an album for the first time in years. I figure being one of my favorite artists I should show them some support. Plus I got some bonus tracks you only get if you buy it

Most musicians make the majority of their money from live shows and merchandise in the first place.
The vast majority of bands barely got dick from album sales before the advent of internet and P2P and such anyway, they would get like 1% at best in many cases. Fuck the record companies anyway for the most part.
Many musicians these days are independent and can become popular through youtube / file sharing alone. So it is in their best interest to put shit out there to increase their exposure. Musicians who knows whats up will put their shit out there for free and have an optional donation button if you want to support them. The more people that listen to you, the more people will buy your shit.
Not to mention if you have millions of hits on youtube videos and tons of subscribers, you can make a pretty decent income from that alone just from running ads.
Digital music is the future, hardly anyone even buys CDs anymore. People still buy records yeah for that vintage analog goodness, but album sales are nothing that they used to be. So record companies are pretty retarded as they have been extremely slow to transition and offer a viable alternative... so people pirate. Only dumbshits like Metallica who already have millions, go after companies for "illegally" hosting their music (suing napster etc..) They are dumb. Embrace the future iTunes made a decent model, but fuck paying $1 per song. I'm sure artists make a good chunk off that as well though.
Smart musicians put their shit out there free and WANT people torrenting their music. If people like you and want to support you, they will. So it's only common sense to let as many people experience your music as possible. Many musicians are now recording and promoting their own music thanks to the internet, no record companies involved. If you really want to support a band.. go see them live and buy a t-shirt. Buying an album usually doesn't give them dick anyway.. UNLESS they recorded/pressed it themselves.
TL;DR: It's a good thing. The bands win - they see more direct profits, more people are exposed to their music. the people win, they get music for free.. the record companies, who fucked musicians up the ass for years, get the shaft.
I've been torrenting / downloading music for like 15+ years and I have zero problems with it. I was also in a band for a number of years and this was before the internet really got big, but we had our shit on there for free too. We wanted people to hear us. I wouldn't have given a single fuck if 500,000 people 'illegally' torrented our music... in fact I'd be elated at that. Would mean more people going to shows and buying merch.
Basically it's easier than ever to get your music out to the world and you don't have to be limited or pigeonholed into only going through a record company to get popular. Internet... fuck yeah.

any musicians that make a living are doing it wrong. Especially off actual sales. Making money and being a fad and appealing to generic mass market pop is just shameful and not music... its more a business and making a right decisions.
Any true musician either lives off tour money or has other jobs

That made no sense. You can't just box everyone up in the same Chinese take-out box because they don't conform to your view of artistry.
