Rye , whole oats, wheat
Kinda dependent upon your area and what you can find, feed stores are a great option
What about spores, have you looked into that?

I just started working with the Columbian rust, they were super clean on agar along with everything else i picked up there. I think you will be quite happy with your choice to order from there , all quality for me so far.

total BS. strain dictates things like that. not variety.
strain is the result of two compatible spores mating.

Ahhhhhhh.... i know with cannibis, you can just straight up cross stuff and know the results of traits(pretty much with trial and error) so i guess this isnt like that

I'll just do the one strain before i try mixing. Where do people ship their spores to, their own house?

it's completely different than weed and plant genetics. in weed "variety/strains" do work like you might think
where else would you ship them?

fair enough.
I'm gonna use Popcorn as my middle sub, and Hpoo as the main... a lot of people seem to have issues. do I HAVE to compost it? or can I use it from fresh? I just want to use it because it is readily available
note: Bulksubstrate inevitable WILL be the last thing I buy, I went with.
note 2: I bought Columbian Rust

Popcorn is okay to start off with but if you have a tractor supply company near you, I would suggest getting whole oats. Oats are the most forgiving grain out there.

new2doinstuff said: What if instead of inoculating jars etc and wasting money on those (which break) I can just make a grow chamber that grows mycellium... THEN i can put it into a bulk, case it and cover it which I can then spread throughout other buckets? I think I'd only ever have to replace the substrate and case?
Check the top-right of the web-page. You're gonna find something like this.
Use it to search the website to find information as to what you're looking for. It actually works!

They are a rip off.
The nice thing about this hobby is its dirt cheap, some jars, plastic totes, substrate/grains..
The only expensive item is a pressure cooker
^^^ All that!
Grow kits are people making money off of your nervousness. I sincerely recommend buying 1 pre-sterilized brf jar with self healing inoculation ports in the lid, and a syringe of spores. It's less then 40$ all and you get to watch the entire life cycle start-finish in an idiot proof contam free way. Once you have sterile environment mycelium, stretching it to make more is the easiest thing in the world. The main point I'm emphasizing here is gain knowledge and confidence with a grow you know will work. Plus you don't have to invest in a pressure cooker until you've grown 1 cycle and decided whether it's a hobby for you or not.

Hpoo just needs to be dry or dried by laying out on a tarp until it is. it must also not smell like shit, it should smell like soil.
