You can't come up with good solutions without properly analyzing what went or is going wrong.
Also, all those injunctions to "think positively" or to "look forward, not backward" you encounter everywhere are basically bullshit management discourse discursive strategies meant to keep others from engaging in the kind of critical thinking that might lead to uncomfortable questions being asked of those who discourage you from analyzing the problems in all their complexity. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Comment: GPGTools - https://gpgtools.org

are you sure about that?
i sort of feel that anything is possible, and the right action comes rather spontaneously once understanding is attained;
it's very true though, the more we sweat in practice, the less we bleed in battle.
also, often more is learned from mistakes or defeats; than from victories - as Karpov said, if you want to get good at chess, lose thousands of games.
it's only one facet of an infinitely engaging topic, of course.
for as we all know, winning brings confidence that one won't feel until one does win, of course, and there's also psychological factors involved with winning; for instance Fischer would often be so intimidating his opponents would simply fail to play their best game - having taken the game to such a high level;
of course he also used intimidation factors outside of the game; which are not strictly necessary - one look at Carlsen proves this beyond shadow of doubt;
needless to say it's interesting.
Another factor on the above point is as Emerson quoted of some poet writing about Hercules - he conquered just by entering a room;
okay, I did find it;
'"O Iole! how did you know that Hercules was a god?" "Because," answered Iole, "I was content the moment my eyes fell on him. When I beheld Theseus, I desired that I might see him offer battle, or at least guide his horses in the chariot-race; but Hercules did not wait for a contest; he conquered whether he stood, or walked, or sat, or whatever thing he did."'
and found this along the way:
'Patience and fortitude conquer all things.'

Positive psychology is the branch of psychology that uses scientific understanding and effective intervention to aid in the achievement of a satisfactory life, rather than treating mental illness.
I've always heard that the more you focus on something... the bigger and more complex it seems. Why not focus on the positive, on what you need to succeed in life as opposed to delving into childhood traumas and such, right?
Basically, I like your ideas here.
Here's an interesting link, if your curious about a Buddhist's perspective on positive psychology.

oh, I've been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 12 years
it's actually very nice and perhaps a coincidence that you posted this, Soup; yesterday I saw and appreciated very much a post/thread that you made (I'm selective about that:)), and will go today to post on it.
I've always heard that the more you focus on something... the bigger and more complex it seems.
that's a quite nice way of expressing it. . . indeed quite true.
and this one:
Quote:
Positive psychology is the branch of psychology that uses scientific understanding and effective intervention to aid in the achievement of a satisfactory life, rather than treating mental illness.
is also very apt and efficacious.
To me this evokes the method of Gentle Action - I recently came across David Peat (wiki) while researching I believe holographic universe theory - mentions it, very fascinating person I would say;
or another way - slight corrections.
Like if you are driving a car and it starts to drift; a slight action is correct response, as opposed to an over-correction or reaction.
I have always felt since I put these together that it's an important concept for all life
The same thing would go for if you are steering a ship.

i agree what came to me during a meditation recently was: "instead of focusing on the problem, focus on living the solution" seems to be the wisest and most effective way to do things
