colonization slowing down?
    #21749267 - 06/01/15 04:22 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I am working on my first grow. I inoculated the jars about a month ago, and the showed signs of colonization followed by rapid growth. However it seems that in the past week or so the rate of growth has drasrtically slowed down. I am concerned it is because there is either too much or too little moisture or because my vermiculite is too course.

How long does it typically take for jars to colonize completely? Is it normal for the growth rate to seem very slow near the end? Anything I can do to speed the whole thing up?

this has happened to me a couple times. did jars ship from somewhere else? if so, they have most likely been sitting out for a while before you inoculated them.  don't wait too long for them to fully colonize, because they will eventually go bad and it will be too late. just take them out of the jars, and scrape away any remaining substrate and continue the process as normal with what you got.

P.S. I would wait another week or so before taking them out if its only been a month

Have you shaken the jars?  If not shaking will redistribute the mycelium throughout the substrate in the jars and will most likely help with full colonization.

If you've already shaken once or twice max I wouldn't wait more than a week after it stalls to spawn.

Photos would help re: moisture level

Are they grain jars or pf cake jars? If grain jars than :whathesaid: If they are pf cakes than, are they stalling at the bottom of the jar?

They are pf tek. I have not shaken the jars.

Actually, I just looked them over (last time I checked 'em was a couple days ago) and it looks like the uncolonized spots are filling in/have filled in. Some of the jars are pretty much fully colonized now, I think everything is fine.

It just seemed like the growth went very rapidly at first and then took a long time to actually finish and that made think something was wrong. I also realized that they aren't supposed to colonize in the area of the dry vermiculite layer on the top, right?

So how do I tell when they are ready to birth?

When the bottoms and sides are completely white. After that, let them sit for a week. Then, dunk, roll and fruit.
