terrarium question

is it a must for my terrarium to be completly air tight?

First, remember that sanitation doesn't need to be as stringent by the time you get to the terrarium. By that time, your mycelium should be strong and thriving, and able to fight off some attacks by other microrganisms. I wouldn't leave a real opening, (not only because of exposure to contaminates, but also because of humidity loss), but you probably don't need an airtight seal. Besides, if you're blowing air into it through some sort of humidifier, that will create a positive pressure inside, pushing invading organisms out the cracks.

Also, you can go a long way toward airtight by simply sealing things with masking tape.
